For people in Singapore, traveling far means traveling by air, and that means Singapore Airlines (SIA). The carrier flies to about 65 cities in some 30 countries, primarily in the Asia/Pacific region but also in Europe and North America. It boasts a fleet of more than 100 aircraft. SIA extends its network via code-sharing with fellow members of the Star Alliance marketing partnership, including United Airlines and Air China. (Code-sharing allows airlines to sell tickets on one another's flights and thus offer service to additional destinations.) The government of Singapore, through Temasek Holdings, owns about 55% of SIA.
Some world travelers prefer seeing the sights, but as DFS Group knows, some prefer to shop their way around the globe. The world's largest luxury travel retailer, DFS (Duty Free Shoppers) runs some 40 stores in 14 countries, located primarily in the Asia/Pacific region. The firm has set its sights on the Middle East and China for growth. DFS stores offer luxury brands of cosmetics and perfume, jewelry, liquor, tobacco, apparel, and other pricey goods. While famous for its airport stores, DFS also runs about a dozen Galleria centers in downtowns and upscale resorts and operates Miami Cruiseline Services, a shipboard duty-free retailer. DFS is part of French conglomerate LVMH's Selective Retailing division.
