What does a Biomedical Engineer do?

Biomedical engineers combine medicine and engineering to help create products, including equipment and devices or computer systems and software, that are used daily by doctors and patients in the medical field. They frequently work in the research and development or quality assurance positions at their companies.

Biomedical engineers design products, including electrical circuit software or computer simulations, to conduct processes including the testing of new drugs or therapies. They also design and build artificial limbs and body parts, including hip or knee joints, replacement body part materials. In addition, they are heavily involved in the design of rehabilitative exercise equipment. Biomedical engineers turn to various technical sources for the design and creation of biomedical technology, including artificial internal organs. They maintain and repair biomedical machines and provide necessary tech support and maintenance. They also train clinicians and other personnel on the safe and efficient use of biomedical products, equipment, and machines. Biomedical engineers need a minimum bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering or related fields.

What responsibilities are common for Biomedical Engineer jobs?
  • Repair, install, and calibrate complex medical imaging equipment and systems.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety rules codes practices and policies.
  • Coordinate/schedule service (self, vendor and, when appropriate, other technicians) via management of customer expectations.
  • Maintain communication with customers regarding the status of equipment repairs.
  • Build and maintain customer relationships. Discuss equipment status and functionality with clinicians.
  • Responsible for ensuring service and documentation is complete, timely, and accurate.
  • Verify the completion of security analysis for new customer equipment.
  • Adhere to regulatory agency compliances and applicable policies and procedures.
  • Interface with customers, sponsors, and visitors to promotes, execute and generate continued work for the facility.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance, assists in inventory management, and may serve as an advisor to other personnel on technical matters concerning specialty equipment.
  • Maintain clinical engineering expertise through ongoing training and education.
  • Provide a positive representation of company services by integrating the core values into job performance.
  • Lead special projects as assigned and contribute to the development of others through mentoring and sharing expertise.
  • Implement new maintenance programs as appropriate and monitors effectiveness.
  • Educate patients on proper use and care of equipment.
  • Monitor the work of outside contractors/vendors engaged in equipment repair.
  • Conceive, design, prototype, test, and analyze concepts to demonstrate technical feasibility.
  • Supervise the daily activities and schedules of the Biomed department staff.
  • Evaluate and/or supervise the evaluation of new equipment, accessories and supplies.
  • Create and maintain documentation in accordance with all ISO policies and procedures.
  • Prepare presentations and reports in support of R&D activities.
What are the typical qualifications for Biomedical Engineer jobs?
