Former Employee - Senior Software Engineer

I worked at AIR Worldwide full-time for more than 3 years

Pros

If you have joined as a fresher then: 1. You will have a great and solid exposure to the product-based industry, you will love this. 2. You will learn about how software gets developed, tested..., and shipped. 3. You will be given small modules to develop and test initially assuming you're in a technical role. However, if you are not in a technical role like software development or automation testing then I feel you deserve something better than AIR. 4. You'll be given an opportunity to improve processes and build innovative tools. 5. Your teammates will be very friendly, always cheering you. That said, there will be times you will be ghosted and you could see nasty politics inside your team or your department. But I feel you should focus on only learning skills in the first 2 years. 6. You will be micro-managed and often you'll be given tasks that nobody would like to pick up. But doing such tasks will give you a deep dive into the product. 7. The pay will be pretty much sufficient for you and you'll have decent perks. 8. The DevOps, AQA and IT teams are the extremely best ones, they do everything in their power to assist you. They move mountains each day. You should interact with them if you get a chance, trust me you'll learn a lot. If you have joined as an experienced (say 4+ years) into a technical role then: 1. You'll get a decent paycheck. But it could be better considering the amount of work and time you'll be giving in. 2. The codebase is very well maintained, however, the technology is quite old. 3. They use C# .NET Framework, WCF, WPF for product development. Only some teams (that too only in Boston) are starting to use .NET Core, R Programming, Docker, Kubernetes, with AWS cloud. 4. Your reporting manager will be very supportive, but again this depends on which team you're hired into. Only some teams have great technical managers. 5. The senior management will interact with you directly on a monthly one-one meeting. You can express your hardships and most of they'll vouch for you and see you get good tasks. However, again not all teams have good senior managers.

Cons

1. You'll face the wrath of senior management after the first 2 months (If you're an experienced employee who joined recently). 2. They expect you to learn their product (which usually takes more... than a year) and develop something innovative or bring in a cultural change into the team which is tough because your team will have folks who have been 7+ years into AIR and they're habituated to their routine job. Most do not assist you. 3. There will be favoritism, most likely you'll be overshadowed and no one will value your previous experience unless you develop something new and groundbreaking innovation. 4. Some team managements are absolutely worse, your reporting manager has no power. Boston folks are the ones in control. If you talk above your pay grade then most likely you'll be forced to leave. 5. There's extreme micro-management on various levels. The Boston team has everything under control. So, the senior team leads in Boston are the problem. I could say Pheonix, Engine Squad, SDG, and AQA are some of the teams. 6. Even though you do great work (like above what you're hired for), you won't be recognized, the annual awards are for boot lickers, for people who have threatened to resign, or for the ones who raised their voice. 7. If you get an award then your annual appraisal will be less. The senior management says, "We already recognized you for your hard work with the mid-year award (i.e. You get a max of 5K INR) so we have already given you a lot, so this discussion is not required." 8. Don't overkill yourself trying to bring in more than 2 innovative projects in a year because the senior management like the VP, Director, does not care unless your projects are widely recognized. 9. There's a great amount of interdepartmental nasty politics among the senior managers and sometimes they decide who gets promoted or moved to different teams. 10. A lot of good people have left AIR Hyderabad in all teams, the SDG, DevOps, AQA, MQA, and SQA teams are the most affected. 11. The management will make you sign bonds to just stop you from leaving. Also, the exit is a very horrible experience. You become the enemy if you choose to leave. 12. Fewer career opportunities if you joined as an experienced engineer. Also, almost all people speak the native Telugu language which is hard to understand. Most co-workers behave as if it is fancy to speak English and on a personal level with your colleagues, you're recognized by your caste.

Advice to Management

Please lay off your HR staff, they are the worst. Also, stop saying 1$ is equal to 25 INR. We very well know what 1$ in INR is. Most people do not involve themselves in innovations because the award... and promotion system at AIR is broken.
