I have been working at BNSF Railway full-time for more than a year
If you start out as a craft empliyee and choose to fo into management you can still retain your seinority in your union as long as you continue to pay dues. It acts as job insurance so if somthing... happenss, like if you are laid off you will always be able to back to youe craft. Also, Railroad Retirement, the only place you can still get a pension, what more is there to say.
24/7 company. It can be very difficult to manage your work life balance depending on your position. It is easier if you are support departments at company HQ in Fort Worth than in the field offices... closer to the action. Also no cost of living adjustment, in the Midwest you will live like a king, in a major West coast city you will barely afford your rent or mortgage.
Advice to Management
Bite the bullet and hire more management level employees so the work life balance is not stretched so thin. Also, and possibly more importantly, provide a cost of living adjustment and you will have... a higher quality of employee in the cities where it is expensive to live (west coast in particular). When an employee in a major city on the west coast is making the same amount in their salary band as someone in a small city in the Midwest it is a lot easier to leave BNSF behind for something that pays equal and has a better work life balance despite loosing the benefits and retirement.

Your co workers are great. Insurance is decent. The company is good. Expeshuaily people that need a training.
Turn overs good people leaving. People treated with no respect. Company could compermise give every other weekend off. Maybe get closer on industry pay scale.
Advice to Management
People need time with their families. Every other weekend not to much. And all sabre companies need to be closer on their pay scale.
