-Limitless potential for those who are comfortable seizing opportunities. If you like to lean in rather than wait to be told what to do you'll love it here. -COVID response has been nothing short of... phenomenal because our leaders know how to run a business while balancing people, profit and purpose. -Leaders are willing to change their minds, be wrong and stay open to new possibilities. Remote work is one example. Now that it's in our future indefinitely there's an excitement in the air about defining the new rules of work for ourselves and other companies who look to us for these trends. -Industry leader, household name, big growth trajectory means we will need future talent to bring enterprise operations experience, rigor and discipline.
-Complicated industries to learn as an outsider. -The amount of opportunities can feel overwhelming so it requires a lot of focus and prioritization. -Our culture is undergoing big transformation... as offices take on a new role and most day to day connections will be virtual in the future. -There's a we/they disconnect between leadership and employees vs other places. As we grow, transform and share our successes I hope it will start to feel like "our company" whereby everyone is expected to act like leaders and lean in to change things rather than wait for someone with a bigger title to fix it.
Advice to Management
-Thank you for the transparency, support, communication and candor over the past year and especially during COVID. I will forever and always remember the deep breath of relief I took after Rich... walked us through the balance sheet in March -- we were ready to weather the storm! -Please stay diligent in our commitments to diversify our team and ensure the diversity we do have doesn't experience career setbacks and other unintended consequences because of COVID + Caregiver responsibilities.
I have been working at zulily full-time for more than a year
- Competent management that listens - Fairly straightforward goals and communication - Sometimes get to work with fun tech - seems to be trying to be a "hip" tech company and succeeding... sometimes - great starting point, especially for junior or midlevel. Many people move on to FAANG afterwards
- Sometimes there's old-school policies that feel like they haven't kept up with modern tech. For example, vacation time is both metered and not paid out on leaving. WFH is kinda unofficially allowed... but seems to be often frowned upon. - Unbalanced in terms of seniority; lots of juniors and mid levels, few seniors. Many people from non-traditional backgrounds without adequate understanding of DS + Algorithms - They seem to want everyone to be a jack of all trades but ace of none. As a result there's a noticeable lack of domain knowledge on any particular project or stack. This however is slowly improving - Mislead efforts in tech that don't address core product or tech issues. For example, instead of refactoring poorly abstracted code, they will add testing over it to make sure it doesn't break. - Sunk cost fallacy seems to pop up every now and then. Some code will no longer meet our needs, or reach some complexity that's impossible to maintain, or simply have some big flaw -- but people will have a hard time giving it up because they spent too much time on it back in the day - Often those with less experience but an abundance of confidence can end up getting power to make decisions. Not huge outreaching ones, but ones that affect the team you're in more than likely
