      Software Engineer Interview

      6 Dec 2016
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at MuleSoft (San Francisco, CA) in Nov 2016

      Interview

I first had a phone interview with a technical recruiter within the company. We covered the technologies I had experience with, and my day-to-day work at my current workplace. He also gave me an idea of working at Mulesoft and what kind of work they do. After that, I did a 1 hour video interview through Karat, which was quite straightforward. I think they were looking for someone that knew how to implement solutions and catch edge cases, rather than knowing any sort of algorithmic solution off the top of their head. I received a call a few days later saying that I had done well enough to get an onsite interview. The hiring scheduler was prompt and scheduled a day that worked for me. There were four interviews in total, back to back, with senior engineers, hiring manager, and VP Engineering. Overall, the interviews were heavily biased towards personal narrative, previous work experience, and projects, rather than knowledge of algorithms and data structures. They were also quite repetitive in the sense that I had to essentially answer the same questions in multiple interviews. The only coding interview was quite trivial. The directions were unclear, which made implementation a bit slow, but it is certainly not difficult for a new grad. I received a call a few days from the same recruiter asking if I had any concerns about joining the company. Then he mentioned that the team thought I performed well on the technical challenge, and that I had to forward them references to move the process along. It was a tiring but pleasant experience so far. However, this is when things start taking a turn for the worse. Before I could send them my references, I received a call from the same recruiter who informed me that the team had changed their mind. He also told me that I did great on the interviews, but that they wanted someone more senior. None of this correspondence was through email, just via phone calls. I feel as though Mulesoft has wasted my time/bandwidth, and doesn't trust their own hiring process. If they wanted someone more senior, they could have tested my competence with more difficult problems. Mulesoft seems like a good place to work on complex problems, but from reading current employee and interview reviews, they seem to have a serious problem in their hiring process and communication.

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at MuleSoft (Buenos Aires) in Jun 2019

      Interview

      Interview questions [1]
