      Software Engineer Interview

      11 Jan 2013
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at OkCupid (New York, NY) in Jan 2013

      Interview

Submitted their online test, then had a phone interview where I coded some solutions on google docs while talking to another engineer. Then was flown to NYC and given a hotel stay at Ace hotel, which was amazing. Their recruiting process definitely top notch, it was a pleasure speaking to them and they were very accommodating. When I arrived for the interview, I talked to 2 pairs of 2 developers, seemed to be someone that had been there a long time and someone that had been there a shorter time in each group. They have a custom brewed webserver and their way of solving scalability is definitely unique. I personally feel like the entire site is simple and could be written in a month or two by a few engineers, but I think their progress on new features is probably slowed by the complexity of their environment. They had an entire floor in their building in Manhattan and what looked like quite a few engineers. My programming prowess on the sample technical questions while in office didn't impress them, but had they given me the task of writing a new feature for their site while I was there, it probably would have. Most of their developers come from ivy league schools, they said that is where they do their recruiting.

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at OkCupid

      Interview

I was definitely excited about the prospect of working with OkCupid! It was one of very few places I had applied, so hearing back from their HR that they would like to invite me for an interview was exciting! The phone screen was good, though it did feel a bit like a sales pitch; but it was a positive experience overall. I was definitely on board for the technical stage of the interview, and was ready to set it up ASAP. So I replied to the email with all the necessary details, and was told that it would be set up after the long weekend. No problem! But then that whole week went by with no communication. So I reached out and was told that it would be set up "tomorrow." But then the rest of that week went by with no communication. I got ghosted by a dating app, which seems ironic 😅 In the end, I was offered and accepted another position. I informed OkCupid that I would be withdrawing my application, and was congratulated and told to check out their Glassdoor. Here I am!

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at OkCupid in Mar 2020

      Interview

OkCupid was a fun place to interview! First step was a technical phone screen with a Staff Engineer. We discussed past projects, work experience and my interests in OkCupid. After that, I received a take home assignment. This was possibly the best take home assignment I have been given. There is a fully documented README that explains all the criteria. There is pre-written data that you use to populate the cite. Also, there are design pictures of how the cite should look. Honestly, it was wonderful to have a set up similar to real-world working conditions. I had a week to complete it. OkCupid passed on me. However, it was a wonderful experience and I would definitely consider applying again!

      Application

I applied through other source. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at OkCupid (New York, NY) in Jul 2019

      Interview

They reached out to me on hired.com and gave me a take home assignment, I completed it, and they liked it. It was all pretty quick. Two days after the onsite interview, they extended an offer. They give neither a signing bonus nor equity . The base pay is all you get. So I tried to negotiate on the base pay. They didn't move from their initial numbers and I rejected the offer. When I rejected the offer, they sounded very rude, furious, and started making many statements/questions like: where do you come from? what is your justification for asking so much? They made many such statements without a break (I don't remember all of it and don't wish to) and I was appalled. Even before the process started, I did tell them that I have interviews scheduled with couple other companies. They were neither ready to negotiate on the base pay, nor ready to wait until I did my other interviews. So I would assume it was not a shock that I turned down their offer. Whatever the reason was, it seemed quite unprofessional , and also desperate, and I am glad I didn't join them.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Take home assignment: A coding question . They gave me a week to finish it. I enjoyed doing it. Was quite challenging and insightful for my standards. Onsite: 4 interviews: coding interview (array-based question with medium difficulty), one design question, one live coding interview on laptop and one behavioral interview .
