Let’s deconstruct a possible answer: The success of a company today relies on two pillars: Excellent Customer Experience and Innovation. Ask yourself: what if the instructions are not keeping the pace with the dynamic of change in the organization, company, and industry? If the action you may take against the instructions of your direct manager will result in better service to the customer (either internal or external), will provide a more efficient solution to a business problem, will help meeting a stringent deadline, or will improve the relationships with customers then you may say “Mission Accomplished” for Pillar 1. As a matter of respect and consideration for your manager, it would be recommendable to inform him/her about your immediate actions via a) a brief reasons/actions/risks/rewards synopsis or b) depending of your knowledge, skills, abilities, tenure in the organization, and relationship with your manager, go with the simple “Trust Me” and do it! A good manager will never stifle the initiative of a direct report.
