Pros

At first the editors seem welcoming, and although you do have to jump through lots of hoops with "practice" articles, they do pay for these.

Cons

The pay! I was really shocked when I realized how dismal the pay is, despite all the formality they require. $5 for a 500-word article? Are they out of their minds? Also, the "sweet" disposition of the editors turns sour if you continue to make even simple mistakes that easily would be corrected a time or two later. There's a lot to remember. When you pour your heart into a piece (*for peanuts!*) they'll dismiss the good piece and chide you for a formatting error. They make you feel like you're simply set up to fail, so you just quit. Or at least that's what I did. I don't recommend this. It's not worth it to a real writer.

Thanks for your honest opinion. We do try to be as transparent as possible on our website and training materials about pay, and we're sorry if that was misconstrued. As for your advice on balancing expectations versus assignment quality, that is always an ongoing process and we'll definitely take that into consideration. We wish you the best!

Pros

From the top down, these are great people to work for--both professional and kind/compassionate, which is rare. The company culture is fairly young/upbeat, and they do a lot to try to include the writers (e-newsletters, Facebook group, etc.) even though we are all scattered across the country. You pick the work you want from communal online spreadsheets (most of the time, as much as you want) and the topics/formatting requirements/pay are stated upfront--no guesswork, no nonsense, very straightforward. There's a thorough new hire training period and lots of help along the way if you have any questions. Account managers are always very responsive if you need help. Writers are paid promptly every 2 weeks via PayPal. Opportunity for advancement to higher paying articles with time/persistence. All in all, not bad for a job you can do in your pajamas from your couch.

Cons

The lowest paying tier of articles come in at around $0.01/word, and the majority of these articles are, in my opinion, more complicated than they should be for this pay level. Even if you write well and type decently fast, you can easily wind up earning less than minimum wage if you aren't careful. I still highly recommend working for this company, but expect to pay your dues, so to speak, on this pay tier when you are first hired.

Pros

You do get to work from home.

Cons

Low pay that doesn't get any better. They'll take you on for a short time, have you write for a penny a word, and when it comes time to move up, you might get let go instead. Even after following their content guidelines, I was still let go. Most content writers in the copywriting business make $25 on the same post that they're paying you $5 for.

Thanks for your review. We're sorry you felt that your experience with BKA wasn't satisfactory! We do need to clarify though that we don't pay out a single cent per word for any of our projects. The majority of our writers are making between 2-3 cents per word on the entry level teams and as specialty projects come in, pay is adjusted based on the project. We do appreciate you trying us out and we wish you the best in your future copywriting endeavors.
