I worked at Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation part-time for more than a year

    Pros

It's all the perks of working for a tech company (free food, beautiful offices etc.) without feeling evil. People really care about the work they are doing which is motivating.

    Cons

Because people are so motivated, you can get sucked into becoming a workaholic. Also, I noticed that different departments/teams are doing a better job at diversity and inclusion than others, and there is a lot of room for improvement.

I worked at Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great benefits, paid time off, honorable mission

    Cons

To succeed, you will need privilege and pedigree. The operational staff are expendable. If you are not a FTE, you will not be a part of the foundation internal events.

I have been working at Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Compensation and benefits are field leading

    Cons

Your experience at BMGF is highly team dependent — so someone’s experience on the Global side vs US side, for example, can be completely different. It’s such big place that many parts don’t often talk to each other Leadership is extremely, shockingly white (e.g. all global divisions which serve largely serve Africa and China are led by white male Presidents), and not reflective of the population being served. Missed opportunity with Sue Desmann-Hellman’s recent departure as CEO to conduct an open search that could have surfaced a diverse candidate pool (vs another white privileged man), which is sadly indicative of how the Foundation hires senior leadership. Constant re-orgs and unclear paths to promotion. Some individuals stay in their roles / titles for many years.
