      I can't say I'd accept a job there

      Pros

The company is tanking hard, so most positions are remote. This allows you to not have to move to Boise to be laid off in 1-2 months after being hired.

      Cons

Over the past five years this company has gone through the gambit. They brought in a crook of a man and placed him as Chief Digital Officer. He terminated all of the IT positions to outsource to his personal company in India. No one in management or leadership looked into this and they sent millions of dollars over sees. They laid off several of the marketing teams and outsourced those to local companies around the nation. Expedia could see knew this company wasn't going to survive long. They sold it to a corporation who takes dying companies. They have several successful companies, but every two years they buy a company getting ready to fail, and use them as a tax write off. The new owners brought in new leadership again. This leader wasn't coy about the health of the company. During our all hands meeting that happened monthly, he would tell us we didn't even make half of our financial goals that month. Eventually they decided to lay off the entire engineering team. They needed to save money, so getting rid of the team that controls the website was an intelligent business plan. They keep bringing in new leadership. I think there were 12 leaders in total. Yet it doesn't seem they can afford those who make just barely "livable" salaries and actually make the company run. The team members constantly asked for help, and leadership would turn down requests to hire AFTER the interview process. For an ecommerce company, trying to take care of their customers, they sure don't do a great job getting products to the customers. There were several customer complaints that shipping took 5 - 14 days for their products to arrive. Why buy from them when Amazon carries the same product and you get it in no more than 2 days?! Most recently they laid off 40 employees in October of 2021. The whole company is built on their content, and they got rid of their entire content team. They are a shady company, and has unethical work practices. You are expected to work 80-100 hours a week, and when you don't commit to that, you are ousted and fired. They give you "unlimited time off" but when you take it any vacation, you're accused of not being committed to the company. After several years and full commitment, you're still not safe.

      Don't waste your time

      Pros

      - Decent pay and benefits (for Boise market) - Flexible WFH - Pretty good work/life balance

      Cons

Truly terrible upper management was allowed to stay in place for over a year, despite constant reports to HR of sexism, disrespect, and incompetence. In the last year, I've seen two acquisitions, two layoff waves (of ~40 and ~75 people), and literal dozens of voluntary departures. New middle/upper management is hired every couple months, upon which we scrap the cumulative "vision" of the last collection of managers and start working on a new "vision." Meanwhile, longstanding systemic problems continue to compound, with fewer and fewer resources left to fix them. Long story short, this company has no future. Look elsewhere.

Probably Not Smart To Take A Job Here

      Pros

Decent benefits (were better when I started...they've been cut back) Nice people (I was always treated kindly) Probably well-intentioned

      Cons

This isn't a very stable place. A year ago they hired A LOT of new people. Six months later they had mass layoffs, which included laying off many of the people they had just hired. Individuals who had relocated and/or left previous employers were suddenly left jobless. Over the past year, many in the company were jumping ship and taking jobs elsewhere. Those positions weren't backfilled (not a great sign). Even worse, the company kept job listings open, solicited applications, and even interviewed candidates. But they weren't necessarily hiring anyone. That's pretty disrespectful to qualified applicants who waste their time applying. It also suggests executives might not be sure where the company is supposed to be going. Hire, fire, hire, fire, interview, don't hire...yikes! The “management” aspect is bizarre. There are just soooo many managers…a ton of managers. After one of the seemingly perpetual reorganizations, my department had 13 people in it but 7 managers. What is that? Literally a manager who managed a manager who managed no-one. And, for all those managers, there’s not a whole lot of actual managing going on. No real discussions about career development, reviews (when they did happen) were mostly just box-checking, never witnessed a manager asking their team for ideas or feedback, etc. Pay is not great. They don't do an annual cost-of-living pay increase. No built-in structures to discuss raises. Even if you're a super star the chance of getting a raise is next to none. Bottom line…don’t leave your job to work here. Definitely DON'T RELOCATE! If you’re already in Boise, you just need a job, and you’re not super concerned with growing your career this would be an option.

15% of Company Laid Off in Jan 2020

      Pros

      - Flex Time Off - Health, vision and dental insurance - Free onsite gym that’s usually empty

      Cons

Unfortunately I was only with the company for a handful of months and was part of the January 2020 lay offs. Local news reported 15% of the Boise corporate office, around 100 people, were laid off so I’m not sure why some reviews have the lay off numbers so low. Regardless of my personal sap story, it’s very obvious the company is in the red and is taking their employees down with the sinking ship. Each quarter ideals change without reflection on the previous quarter. Some quarters it’s all about e-commerce, others it’s about the app. Constantly ping-ponging around tells me C-Level doesn’t know what they want. Not to mention company culture is way in the dumps. Who wants to give 110% with such a lack of job security?! Such a disappointing experience from someone who was such a BBcom fan.

      Pros

Friends, bonuses, free shelf, insurance, 401k

      Cons

When the company began to grow, so did its problems. The management was/is ultimately its downfall. It began with the FDA raids. Than the Pennsylvania warehouse fraudulently scamming customers. Their employees were scanning the orders and dropping them in the trash. Not to mention that the warehouse was somehow missing a million dollars in inventory. But that mess was swept up under a rug when the other warehouse managers spent a month cleaning up that mess. Than they shut down two warehouses, Boise Idaho days after their huge black friday/cyber monday sale. The Florida warehouse followed the next year. I definitely feel for those people that gave their everything because they were lied to.

      Cons

Still have some employees that are not in to win. We hold on to bad employees too long and give too many chances.

      Cons

      - More layoffs, but in smaller quantities and spaced out so the company doesn’t have to legally report it to the labor board -No raises this year - Even MORE scaled back benefits - I’ve seen the financial numbers- they aren’t good!!! - Loss is talent to other Boise companies (or out of state in some cases) - Morale keeps dropping and the smarter people keep leaving for greener pastures -Company still for sale but offers aren’t good enough apparently which is a joke as we are in deep debt

      Good People, Terrible Engineering Management

      Dec 23, 2017 - Anonymous Employee

      Pros

For the most part the people at the company are pleasant to be around and there are talented engineers. Product discount, on-site gym, supplement samples. Depending on your state, you can work remotely so long as you don't live in the Boise area. The non-managers who are still around seem to really care about the company. You'd have to to stick around right now.

      Cons

Management is terrible, there are managers/execs who seem to be systematically laying off anyone who disagrees with their opinion and it appears that the executives either don't realize what is happening, don't care, or are fine with it. These layoffs have killed any vibe there was. It's almost like people are waiting around to see who is next. The great culture of the past that everyone talks about is basically dead. The office is pretty solemn most of the time. Engineers get very little credit and benefits but are also expected to put in tons of work. The perks/benefit/regard to work ratio is probably the worst I have seen among most modern "tech" companies. Certain managers seem to only be looking out for themselves.

      Changing Environment

      Pros

Bodybuilding.com was my first "real job" out of college and was truly an amazing place to work. There was constant communication between all levels of management and a sincere desire among all employees for the company to succeed. The benefits are competitive, particularly for the Boise, Idaho area.

      Cons

Unfortunately over time, like many growing companies, the soul was lost and the culture began to fade. With the addition a new CEO there was almost an instant decline in motivation across the entire company. The environment became more toxic as there were increasingly more closed door conversations and whispers in the halls about whatever rumor was spreading at any time.

      Think twice

      Pros

The engineering team is working on moving the company's technology stack to a micro services architecture deployed to Amazon Web Services. There is a lot of interesting things to work on.

      Cons

There has been a lot of instability at the company for the last year and a half. The just laid off 15% of the workforce after months of insisting that that was not going to happen. It is especially risky for those who are not at the corporate headquarters in Boise. I'm not convinced that the new corporate direction is well thought through. They're trying to add new audiences but may be taking their eye off of their core constituency.
