Managment does not recognize top talent

Pros

The benefits are decent, but average at best.

Cons

Management tends to strip away an employees accomplishments only to revert back to what the employee had accomplished only so the management can take credit for the employees hard work. Working for this company is like being in a slave labor camp - one's experience is never considered, you work long hours, forced to work by yourself with no help, while they continue to pile on the work load. It has become very difficult to take any time off due to the tremendous work load only to be constantly told to take time off so that it makes the manager look good. The managment tends to cover up their mistakes but manipulating company policy so that they can blame the employee next time they make the same mistake. Amazing how you can make mistakes as a manager and get away with it as long as you have an employee to pin the blame on. Management's only concern is their personal image, how everything affects them so much so that it makes us feel like we should be worshipping them like Gods. To work here, you don't need a degree in your field, only a degree in Political Science, and then you will be able to advance within the company. There is no room for advancement with this company. Management has stated that if you want a promotion, you have to leave the company. If that is truly the case, then working elsewhere would be your better option, not here. Was told by management that it is better to keep you as our slave instead of making you a manager because we can't find a replacement as productive as you. Then being a very productive employee means a death sentence with no chance of ever being promoted.

Pros

Actually it's been equal parts farce and tragedy since Florida man took over this once proud company. Turnover is north of 30% and entire practice groups are exiting from the toxic leadership and communication style of Florida man. It's felt like an enemy occupation ever since this ownership group took over. Some nice, knowledgeable engineers, scientists, and support staff. Individual offices, close to Old Orchard and forest preserves. Engineers starting here go on to much bigger things elsewhere. When the department head inevitably gets fed up and bails, the next in line gets a chance to advance their career. Rinse, cycle, repeat.

Cons

To be fair, this co. was declining long before Florida man and his cronies took over the company in an insiders deal but rather than being the change agent little big man imagines himself to be, he's a trumpist bully who alienates and offends everyone around him. Contemp is his default mode, always quick to point fingers or talk over people. Stand up to him and he'll dislike you. He will lie to your face and insult you behind your back. I've been witness to every type of ism while there: Racism, Ageism, Sexism falling out of his big Machiavellian mouth. Acts like his money sets him above everyone, born on third base, convinced he hit a triple.

Pros

Known for their concrete expertise and laboratory. Lots of history. Ability to see many different places because of work travel.

Cons

There is a lot of turmoil and people leaving due to new ownership. It is antiquated and not changing with the times. The buildings have mouse traps in the offices and roaches in the bathrooms. This is no story, it is true. Technology and equipment are very old and breaking down. They have not invested in the newest technology because they have the mentality if it isn't broken, don't change it. Innovation is lacking. Mentorship does not happen. It is every person for themselves. You are constantly being asked about your utilization but they are not doing much to help. People are just not happy and are constantly complaining about the place. Very toxic atmosphere. The new owner is a dictator and will look you in the eye and lie. He will act like he likes you but talks about you to others with no shame, He believes bullying is the way to manage. He also acts like an "old boys network" guy. If you are looking for a place to be excited to go to work, this is not the place. There are a lot of talented people who have been there for a long time, but they are also worried about themselves and many will be retiring but the owner will still be the owner.

It's true, change is hard and not everyone was on board with the transition in ownership. We wish those folks well. Insofar as our campus is concerned, it's been here in Skokie since 1946 and receives regular pest abatement visits. CTL hopes your newest career endeavor is kinder to your entomophobia.
