Decent pay for higher ed
Cons
A lot of turn over
- Former Employee, more than 1 year★★★★★
Pros
Pretty center campus. Decent education.
Cons
This school does not care about its students at all. Tuition price tag continues to raise, but quality of education remains stagnant. The school will do anything to protect its false reputation, often at the expense of students or mass-elimination of faculty. Canisius has faced multiple lawsuits for hiding corrupt practices by staff treating students unfairly or inappropriately for the simple fact that it is a corrupt facility with a cracked foundation. A word to the wise: consider all options before settling for an education at Canisius.

A college steeped in tradition ready to embark

Pay and teaching load are fair and higher than area institutions, campus is active and welcoming, colleagues are genuine, scholarship is impressive, grant support capabilities exist, many opportunities for faculty growth and development.
Cons
COVID intersected with a difficult time at the college in general, and morale is low and disengagement widespread (this is hardly an isolated issue in higher ed). The prospect of new strategic vision that comes with an administrative change is a source of hope and positivity in this area.

Most of the members of the Biology Dept are basically good people with moral compasses. They are justifiably fearful of the wrath of 1-2 members of the department. They are not courageous enough to stand up for their own new hires, unfortunately. This is probably due to a backbiting, gaslighting, & fear driven atmosphere cultivated by a particularly dangerous & deceitful member of the department.
Cons
If you are an accomplished scientist & instructor, and you value your career & sanity, do not accept a teaching job in the Dept of Biology. A colleague with sociopathic characteristics has a track record for targeting impressive new faculty & those he perceives as a threat to his dominance & control. I did not believe that sociopaths actually lived amongst us until I went to work here, and met one. He openly reveled in describing the ways he likes to “punish his enemies”, if he “knows he can get away with it.”. He actually talks that way. People liked to pretend he was kidding…. but he wasn’t. His personal relationship with a weak-minded but high ranking administrator gives him the power to ruin people’s careers. The pleasure he receives from manipulating & hurting of others is his raison d’etre. Steer clear of Biology. I have heard good things about other academic departments. Our sister department, ABEC, is wonderful.
