I have been working at Capital One full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Really smart people, who are fun to work with. This is a fast paced environment that is always changing, but that keeps the work interesting. The facilities are amazing with really great food options. Amazing training opportunities. Excellent pay and benefits. On-site doctors with no co-pays, pharmacy, gym, rental car, etc.

    Cons

Annual performance management reviews are based on a strict bell curve, with 15% having to be rated below strong each year. This gets increasingly difficult, especially when you are in smaller, specialized, high performing departments.

I have been working at Capital One full-time

    Pros

    - Very accommodating culture, i.e. very flexible with work / life needs and commitments. - Generally a collaborative approach to solving problems, where diverse views matter. - Up to date facilities and amenities, focused on using technology to enable and accelerate work.

    Cons

    - Very rigorous performance management process that may generate anxiety and stress for those not used to being compared to their peers and examined under a microscope in order to determine incentive/bonus payouts. - Occasional challenges with accepting ideas from outside the company.

    Pros

Great people, very intelligent, great team players, toxic workers are not tolerated. People generally believe in the company’s values and work to sustain them.

    Cons

Pressure to perform. Forced distribution in performance management process means you can never be sure if your contributions are good enough.

I have been working at Capital One full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Salaries and benefits are very good.

    Cons

This is a place you want to love and enjoy working but middle management makes it very hard. There is a lot of talk about development opportunities but that is only true for friends of directors. The company doesn't value experience, it values new grads and new people so turnover is high and you end up with people with a couple of years into their working lives at the same level as very experienced people. Its hard to know who works there from one day to the next. Each part of the business is run by somebody on the leadership team, they believe their business area is their own fiefdom and every area has a very different culture, so the experience as an employee is wildly different depending on where you work. The middle "director" level fear making decisions, don't appear to trust the people in their teams, and every decision gets escalated right to the top, so if you're far down the pecking order it is very hard to get any work done. There is little psycholgical safety because senior people recruit their friends. The performance management system is used as a stick.
