Poor culture with too many eunuchs in management

    Mar 12, 2022 - Software Engineer

    Pros

Competitive remunerations with "iron rice bowl" career. Good work-life balance and meaningful mission. Colleagues are generally nice and friendly.

    Cons

Poor engineering culture because of a lack of exposure to industry best practices and experienced senior technical experts. Many eunuchs in management whose only skills is in managing upward and painting an overly optimistic picture of the ground. Too many senior people who stuck around simply because they do not have the tech skills to land a job outside. They are then somehow promoted into middle and senior management positions and continue to perpetuate the poor culture they exploited to get to where they are. At the same time too many good people have left or are leaving because of the poor culture and because tech expertise is not valued. Even when we had good hires from the private sector, they tend to leave quickly and fed-up with what they experienced. A huge red flag that something is truly wrong. Many in the middle and senior management seem to be focused on bureaucratic theatre, implementing more red tapes and bureaucracies (to justify the need for their positions) rather than leading and solving problems at the working level. Perhaps because they do not possess the necessary competence to do so, or because their careers are vested in the org having a bureaucracy first culture.

    Good WLB

    Pros

    - Good wlb. You will very seldom need to work long hours because things move relatively slowly. - Salary is decent, and bonuses are aplenty. It's an iron rice bowl job, really. You will never have to worry about being paid below market average. - You will have a lot of opportunities to work on new technology stacks, do exploration of tech and implement various POCs - Lots of bonding sessions - Benefits are decent - A lot of team bonding sessions. - Good place to start your career as an engineer if you intend to pivot into management some day.

    Cons

    - Engineering culture is quite bad, management doesn't care about engineering quality and there's generally a mindset of 'if it works, then that's all it matters'. - Too many people there have been there for their entire life, no exposure to the private sector and how proper engineering should be done. You will not learn things like how to scale your applications to support a million users etc. - Can't bring a camera phone in. If you are reading this review 5 years down the road, I'm quite sure that it will still be the case. - Very bureaucratic, as with all public sector jobs. - No onboarding processes for new engineers.. Just hand you the codebase and expect you to figure things out on your own. But generally, that is not a too difficult task.

    Pros

Good if you want a place to chill at.

    Cons

People there do not see the outside world and think they are really good. The engineering culture is really bad but they like to tell people at recruitment outreach the opposite.
