If you are willing to work 24/7.....

      21 Apr 2023 - Wealth Planning Manager

      Pros

Brand name. A good stepping stone for fresh grads

      Cons

Basically a glamourised insurance agent. Zero work life balance. This is a sales position so you can expect to be chased by numbers every day, constantly being compared to your colleagues, work 6-7 days a week. You start as early as 8-9am, ending after 7pm is a norm. Managers expect you to be at their disposal. There are so many times I had to cancel my plans as they always give last minute notices, like on the morning of the day itself, that you have to stay back until 8-9pm to make calls. As if you don't have a personal life. And you can't say no because "everyone is attending". And no, you don't get OT. No annual bonuses or AWS. Even on off days or on leave your manager still reaches out to you asking about work. Even when you have hit your target, it is always still not enough, "you can do more". Lots of red tape, but at the same time there are people getting away with unscrupulous methods and horrible work ethics because they have good sales. So no thank you. Unless you are willing to devote your life to your job.

      Pros

Great benefits. There are some nice people. The senior management is quite nice compared to the junior mgmt.

      Cons

-Some veteran colleagues are very good at politics - not even proper handover or official document, this is an operational risk hazard. -Induction at departmental level is quite bad and the culture is that they don't value the quiet one only those that speak out loud even though is wrong. -No worklife balance I had to work OT evenings and burn weekends for silly reporting metrics, which doesnt even go up to management. -The most credible and qualified individual doesn't get to be involved/initiative, its all determined by the group culture. Alot of putting on superficial front. -Colleagues vying for effort and taking credit from your work, this is quite toxic i.e. some business partners like likes to hide your effort or the analytical guy effort, it doesnt matter if you know how to do the right things to them. -There is no proper KMS system, metadata are all superficial level and not useful.

Do not be deceived by the catchphrase ‘More like so and so, less like a bank’

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Good benefits and insurance coverage. Free flow coffee even though not the atas type like the big tech companies.

      Cons

Onboarding experience is below expectations. Expected to give 100% at work when the management does not do the same. Archaic methods of project delivery with typical corporate politics. Not a suitable work environment for tech-savvy employees who enjoy thinking outside the box in finding solutions.

      Cons

Salary is not up to market standard. It is still a paper society where incompetent scholars where their progression are predetermined and they are able to progress definitely.

      Not recommended for high performers

19 Apr 2023 - Software Engineer in Singapore

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Stable job, low chance of layoffs even when you are under-performing. Not much other benefits that I can think of.

      Cons

Poor onboarding experience. Manager (SVP level) was incompetent (both technically and soft/management skills), and was constantly MIA, so I had to do all his work (including attending meetings, conducting training and interviews, mentoring other people in the team) despite getting being paid a junior engineer salary. Despite performing at several levels above my pay grade and pretty much architecting and building the entire project to successful release, I received an increment below inflation rate and a bonus below an average performer, despite already being paid way below market rate for the responsibilities I was doing. (As reference, I received multiple job offers that offered a 100% increase above what DBS was paying me) Many colleagues that I worked with were also generally incompetent and always looking to push responsibility to others. Despite this, they often have high ranks. There is also lack of diversity, most of the people in the tech department are from the same particular country.
