Pros

I made a lot of friends here. If you NEED a job in tv, work here as briefly as you can.

Cons

The pay is insultingly low, even for starter market standards. It is very common across several departments to need a second job to make rent (with a roommate). Heard it stated from higher ups that they don't want to maintain employees in many positions so they can keep payroll low. The turnover is rapid fire because the pay is so bad and the workload can be so demanding (mission accomplished then). You pay for your own parking. Because very few people stay, many issues never get resolved. Healthcare was an HMO, no retirement benefits. The hours are very rough but that's just working in tv for the most part. I cannot stress how little you will be appreciated in any meaningful way, and you won't change anything here. You will have to sign a non-compete to work here, so you can't go work at the real station in town. Many, many people leave the business after working here. No real management, leadership, vision nor means to turn things around. The business itself is largely seen as a joke in the area. They are easily dominated in every possible direction by their competition. If you do work here keep track of everything. Take notes in every meeting, clarify what decision is being made, get ALL agreements in writing, make sure the right amount is being deducted from your check. Cover your own self every single day until you leave.

Pros

Ability to move up quickly

Cons

Where to begin… the pay is atrocious, barely above minimum wage. Three year contracts for on-air talent, if you break your contract early the owners will file suit to recoup damages (the amount remaining on your contract.) There is no upper management. There is a news director, no HR, no assistant news director, no executive producer. There is an environment of complacency and toxicity that permeates the building, (along with water marks all over the ceilings). Instead of increasing salaries to compete with other stations in the market the owners are too busy acquiring small stations in micro markets across the country. They have slashed costs everywhere they can. Positions, vehicles, even local news programming. The way this station is run does a disservice to the viewers of the Delmarva region, and any young journalists looking to jumpstart their careers.
