Pros

A lot of interesting and valuable research comes out of IIASA. The salaries are good. The junior and mid-level staff are generally great people and there is a nice sense of community.

Cons

Some aspects of IIASA are stuck in the 1970s. The organization in shockingly hierarchical, with more junior members of staff often shouted down and prevented from giving their input. The old boy’s network that is made up of (most of) the program directors is very damaging to the institute, as they routinely prevent modernization and serve their own interests rather than the institute's. It also has poor equality policies, and few women in senior positions.

Pros

Well respected in the climate science-policy world, with many top level researchers carrying out impactful work. Lots of employee driven social events, especially throughout the summer, with some really great people from all over the world. Beautifully located in a refurbished Habsburg castle connected to a large public park.

Cons

Excessive top-down control from the directorate level (new executive solicited input from researchers and staff for months with workshops and open documents, then ignored the results) Some resistance to innovating, though maybe not across all programs - A few people who don't contribute much and should move on
