Inept management - the higher up you go the more inept, high levels of debt in the form of bonds restrict ability to invest, lack of leadership, ageing workforce with best staff close to retirement, Stratus hierarchy of decision-making 1 Finance, 2 Engineering, is a recipe for disastrous strategic decision, large number of employees with many years service (= stagnation & lethargy), key members of staff leaving as a result of all of the above. The company is organised in functional silos which mean inter-departmental co-operation is limited. Politics are rife. Stratus is focused on delivering high availability servers, and as other vendors produce increasingly reliable hardware, the market for Stratus products is diminishing and it is increasingly difficult to justify the significant price difference for the hardware, and, especially, the service element. The annual maintenance is typically 30% of the server list price.
