Pros
Great pay for a civil engineer that can't be beat working for traditional civil engineering companies. Good work/life balance (most people get into the office by around 8am, and the parking garage is cleared out by 5pm). Good flexibility in working remotely if needed for doctor appointments, etc. Great networking opportunities within the company and you can have fun playing the corporate 'game.' You get a new position every 2-3 years so never get pigeon holed into doing only 1 thing.
Cons
Everybody in my group quit (a trend these days), so my hours have been closer to 12+ hr days. Honestly I'm just not passionate about oil and gas. The pay can't be beat if you're a civil engineer, which is why I decided to give the job a chance. I'm actively looking for jobs elsewhere now because I can't scratch the itch for wanting to work on a civil infrastructure or building construction project (the reason I chose to get my degree in civil engineering).

Treated like your 5, managers think they are gods given gift. Way too many procedure and rules. Have the staff don’t know what they can and can’t do as there are so many conflicting rules. Job role is very boring and not busy!

At my location, the people with whom I work are very friendly, helpful, and team spirited. There are a lot more team building activities than I had expected before I started working here. There is a great focus on safety in the workplace, and the company is committed to ensuring its employees' wellbeing. The pay is competitive within the industry and has a lot of potential to grow according to your performance.
Cons
The company ranks its employees but doesn't share your specific place in rank to you. They will tell you what bracket in which you fall (top third, bottom third etc), and your compensation is tied to your rank position. (This is only a con for the poor performers!)

-Secretive ranking and promotion process -Not innovative at all -Doesn't foster creativity -Moves you around to different jobs and different cities every ~2 years and you have no say in where you go or what you do. Many employees in their 50s have lived in 13 different cities with XOM...not uncommon. XOM doesn't understand that this doesn't fit the mold of younger generations. -Bureaucratic

culture of high integrity. very competent and smart people who gets things done. great pay and prestige. great Employee Resource group. safety first.
Cons
the force ranking system creates bad incentives and penalize employees who have a bad year. It also forces people to be the same assertive, A-type personality to climb the ranking. It is also used unfairly to lay people off without calling it a layoff. No work life balance. I quote from a former supervisor "ExxonMobil load up your plate to 120%, and you have to decide is most important to get done". For me that often means stay in the office after hours to catch up. My decision to say no and leave the office at 4 to have more time with the family did not help my ranking.

Good place to learn & develop. Strong starting salary (although pay currently frozen and yearly increments lower than industry standard)

Shocking culture of blaming employees Poor reliability blamed on employees working from home during a pandemic despite years of underinvestment. Actively making people redundant resulting in excessive workload. Minimal plans to address climate change and no acknowledgement of fault in the Exxon Knew scandal. Poor local environmental performance of Fawley site.
