Extremely Disconnected From its Proclaimed Mission

Pros

Beautiful setting and views of nature, but not a reason to take a job.

Cons

Organization claims to stand on Buddhist principles, but the staff and board do not practice what they preach. Managing director is highly passive aggressive, with extremely poor communication skills, and does not consider or attempt to obtain other's views. Bullying and dishonest - not at all Buddhist. They hire talented people with proven track records, block them from doing the work they were hired to do, and then accuse them of not doing their jobs. This is a repeated pattern. Highly dysfunctional. Unstable. Bleak outlook for this struggling organization. Do not quit a stable job to come here. Talk to people who have left.

A mismanaged grind in service only to the founders

Pros

The location is beautiful, free meals (the quality varies), and some flexibility with time. Commutable. Affordable area.

Cons

HR is genuinely ineffective and it takes years for anyone to be spoken to, much less. disciplined for any reason. The Institute has a track record of making poor hiring decisions, specifically at the director-level, as they seem to look down on local candidates in favor of "city" execs. This is to the detriment of the institution and the local staff. The board is distant and (for the most part) disinterested, and the founders treat the center as their own personal playground. Poor communication, operations in deficit, and a general avoidance of honest conversations among staff. The benefits are average, health care goes up every year without fail, and the compensation is good for the area, but don't expect to get a raise or a bonus that makes the Institute a career. This place is not worth your time, no matter what kind of spiritual, do-gooder, 'we care' narrative is put forth. It's not actually put into practice.

Pros

Building, Property, Programs, the teachers and retreat attendees you have the opportunity to meet.

Cons

Highly inactive Board. Very high turnover in Development Department. Hired & Resigned with Development Department being known as "cursed".
