A great place to work, and growing

Pros

Owner/president Scott Baradell works hard to build a collegial environment. A great, fun group of folks. Happy hour on Fridays. Employer-paid health care costs (yes, 100 percent; how rare is that?). Best of all, this place is growing fast. When I left for another opportunity, Scott was working on a bonus plan based on performance. If you can get into Idea Grove now and you perform well, you'll have a good shot to be in on nearly the ground floor of a company with a bright future. When I was there, I heard a couple folks complain about work-life balance while I was there, but honestly, few among the rank-and-file at Idea Grove log more than 40 hours per week. It's a work hard-and-go-home type of place. As for at least one negative review I've seen here on glassdoor, it's pretty easy to figure out who that was. He was lousy at his job, unenthusiastic about doing a good job and did little but complain. Scott gave him a break right out of college and this entitled little dweeb he saw fit to bite that hand. So, as with everything, take reviews with a proper grain of salt. You could do far worse than work for Scott Baradell. With a little initiative and creativity (something that troll of a former employee lacked), you can have a hand in running this place before long.

Cons

If you do not suffer change well, this might not be the place for you. Idea Grove is still close enough to its inception to be considered a startup. That means things (work processes, goals, company structure) change rapidly as the company "grows up." This is not necessarily a "con." It's just life in a small, growing company.

An agency that lost its way

Pros

There are two big pros about working at Idea Grove. 1) You will learn a ton about PR and marketing across the entire spectrum of tactics. Idea Grove uses diverse and integrated strategies for clients. Working there will make you a better marketer. 2) In my experience, Idea Grove tends to hire great people who are a joy to work with personally and professionally.

Cons

There are 2 main cons to working at Idea Grove. 1) The heart of the agency is on life support. For a long time, what made Idea Grove truly special was the owner's commitment to his people and their well being. Management believed in always being transparent and supportive with staff. Recently the agency seems to have done a 180 in regards to the culture and ethos of the agency. People are no longer treated with respect and openness, but as usable cogs in the machine. 2) During my time at Idea Grove, contracts were consistently and drastically oversold and over-serviced, leaving the account team in a no-win situation of trying to do way more than the hours allotted to the account would allow. That leads to stressed and overworked employees and unhappy clients whose results fall short of expectations.

Pros

Being a small company, you get exposed to a ton. Can oversee your work from start to finish and have more responsibility/control at a lower level. The medical benefits are pretty great - lots of options and full coverage for employees.

Cons

This company thrives on a culture of drama. It starts from the top and is definitely reinforced by the behavior of management. They want an "open door policy" where anyone is free to talk to the president (or other senior level employees) about any concern at any time, but when someone is actually brave enough to bring up a concern, they are met with defensiveness, excuses and explanations about why things are the way they are. Management isn't actually willing to listen or accept the fact that they aren't perfect. It's not a bad thing that the company has flaws (nothing is perfect) but it's the attitude of unwillingness to change or admit mistakes that's painful. It feels like condescending and gossipy behavior is not only allowed, but practically celebrated once you reach a certain level. Employee turnover is unreal, and every single person who quits is told how "they were never really in the right place here" and "it was just obvious they weren't a good fit" - even great employees who were given multiple promotions. Again, they struggle with admitting their flaws and the fact that horrible managerial behavior drives people to leave. They may tell you how it's a family and everyone who's there is excited to be there, but why would a company with employees that love it so much not have one review in the past 2 years from a current employee?

Hi, this is Scott. I'm sorry you have those feelings when reflecting on your time at Idea Grove. I guess "growing pains" for some represent a "horrible environment" for others. What's objectively true is that over the past two years, we've transitioned from an agency that served mostly small clients to one that is doing award-winning work for some of the top brands in our space. We've beaten out agencies like FleishmanHillard, Edelman and others in RFPs and pitches that we wouldn't have had a chance to participate in not long ago. That doesn't happen by accident. That also doesn't happen without changes to the organization, which are never easy. I think most of the folks at Idea Grove would tell you that they are learning and growing and feeling supported by the rest of the team, and that they enjoy the work they do. I think they would tell you that their teammates are quick to jump in to help in any situation. And I think they would tell you that their managers, by and large, are doing a good job of mentoring and nurturing them. There's no question that Idea Grove would not be what it is without the advice and help of everyone on the team. That includes the person who left this review, for that matter; while things didn't work out in the end, you did make important contributions while you were here and they are appreciated.
