Pros

People care about each other there. You won't get walked out the door because you are having a hard week or month or even a year. There are a lot of fun people and the culture is fairly relaxed, especially for an insurance company.

Cons

There is a high resistance to change at IH. If you are a person who wants to solve the root of a problem, you will probably be very frustrated. There are many people in leadership roles that do not understand technology but try to steer technology decisions. This results in lots of money wasted on vendors and internal technical team members struggling to make bad solutions work. HR is also extremely inflexible and limits pay below market. The structure of pay and bonuses is in complete opposition to performance culture making it a comfortable spot for people with no interest in achievement. If you are a high-achiever, there is a lot of dead weight around that will try to drag you down to their level of performance. The yearly review process is time consuming, extremely tedious, and mostly pointless but it "must" be done on an arbitrary date, despite of anything important that you might be busy with. There are many project managers with apparently not enough work to do so they spend their time interfering with people who are trying to get real work done and pretending to be actual management.

An Independent Health owned affiliate

Pros

Most associates have a genuine desire to do the best that they can regardless of the environment.

Cons

Cannot speak for all Independent Health affiliate companies in Western New York but if you are in a Management role as I was formally, you will be taken advantage of by being forced to take on an insurmountable workload and held accountable for poor decisions made by executive leadership. The expectation is that you will be married to your job, which includes being able to be contacted while on PTO. The behind the scenes motto is that everyone is replaceable, which is opposite of what is said in front of the larger associate population. Many positions are held by individuals who in no way earned the roles but there is a common theme as to why they have them, if you look close enough. If you are supervisory level or above and considering a position at an Independent Health affiliate, do some soul searching prior to applying as you will take this work home with you and you will be made to feel defeated, regardless of how effective you are as a leader. For such a small organization, you would be surprised at the politics that are in play.

Pros

Competitive salary, amazing health insurance, incentives for not being a slob(aka incentives for healthy activities), lots of volunteer opportunities, great coworkers. On site gym.

Cons

401k match doesn't hit until after a year which is kind of silly. Company is smaller so there is a limit to movement up the ladder. Less vacation time than would be expected. Work/ life balance is needed.
