      Pros

Been here since 2008. Been through 3 P in total. Each P has different way of managing. A lot of time, your performance depends on HOW your SL view and look at you. You can be a passionate teacher who really wants to make a difference to the people around you. However, at the end of the day, if you are viewed negatively and maybe not so good with relationships with the Middle Mgt (HODs, YHs, STs), it may not be easy to juggle. Sometimes, you still need a bit of luck. During the performance appraisal, you think you did alright. However, things may be different when they are judging you from the top. There is a bell curve for performance appraisal. That means, even if everyone in the schools perform well, you will still be subjected to the BELL curve, and be graded with a not-so-good grade. Go in with EYES open. Colleagues are good. However, when everyone is very busy, it's very difficult and you will still have to depend on YOURSELF many times to get through it. The 6 weeks holidays at the end of year is good. However, throughout the whole year, you are running at top speed. Sometimes, when you get a not-so-good grade, you may need to think if the career is still the right one for you.

      Cons

Depending on your CEP, it will increase or decrease depending on your current grade. Once you get a D, its very difficult to bounce back to a C or C+. C- grade is something that is stick onto you, maybe the next few years till the whole SL change, or you may want to change the school you are posted to.

About working in HQ (non-teaching role)

20 May 2023 - Manager, HQ in Singapore
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

There is some flexibility for mode of working due to nature of work. The culture is not as cut throat or competitive comparing to the corporations, people are more forgiving with you making mistakes in the process even if it cause some monetary losses or delays.

      Cons

Fast paced and deadlines are always very close. There are too many layers in the bureaucracy. Many titles inflation which the actual administration decision power only goes to the director a few level above.

      relief teachers do everything

      Pros

none really, we do everything especially if you have teaching experience

      Cons

we do invigilating and marking of tests and assignments and run the classes and deal with students and deliquent homework. students do not respect you like their own homeroom teachers and try to derail classes by causing distraction. the department still want you to chase down homework from students, do marking on tests and assignment, teach classes and full time is handing 4 to 5 classes or more of students assignment and grading if you don't do it, you aren't invited back to be a relief teacher on call With covid, alot of teachers disappear due to sick leave and the relief are there to fill in. we do not get vacation paid time off, bonuses or holidays some teacher gently strong arm you to "help" out, you end up doing all the work due to pity for the unaware kids and parents, the teachers had the audacity to ask you to dowork because they know you won't say no, and other teachers are aware but won't stand out to say anything. I get paid just $1000 gross BEFORE DEDUCTIONS to do work equal to a full time MOE teacher

      Review of MOE

      Pros

As an educator at the Ministry of Education Singapore, I had an amazing experience. The organization provided me with the opportunity to inspire and guide young minds towards their full potential. The MOE culture is incredibly supportive and collaborative, which allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. The resources and tools available to support teaching and learning are top-notch, ensuring that the students receive the best possible education. Overall, my experience at MOE was excellent, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in making a positive impact on the lives of students.

      Cons

My experience at the Ministry of Education Singapore was overall positive, but I believe that there is still room for improvement. While I received good support and guidance from my colleagues, I think that the organization could benefit from more opportunities for professional development and growth. There also seemed to be some communication gaps between different departments and teams, which could lead to confusion and delays in completing tasks. Additionally, I would have appreciated more transparency and clarity in terms of performance expectations and career advancement opportunities. Overall, I believe that with some improvements in these areas, the Ministry of Education Singapore could provide an even better experience for its employees.

Stable job, enough to stay comfortable

18 May 2023 - English Teacher in Bedok New Town,
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

      1) Stable 2) Great colleagues (most of them) 3) Career advancement is quite steady if you are hardworking and make your wishes known/heard 4) Ends early some days of the week., giving you time to do your own things

      Cons

      1) Long hours 2) Dealing with parents can be tiring 3) Admin work daily 4) To get a good performance bonus, you need to do much much more than just teaching. You are not awarded bonus based on how well you teach but how well you do other stuff that benefit the students/ school.

      Poor work life balance

      10 Feb 2023 - Educator in Singapore

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Pay is decent, meaningful when you see your students grow and get better. School and teachers could be an escape from their terrible home environment

      Cons

Even if you are passionate, they extinguish the passion by overloading you under the guise of “stretching your potential”. School management is very important, sometimes you have those who want to wayang and have meetings the whole day, others are better, but as a teacher you don’t have a lot of options - moe posts you where the “needs” are - the school I was at had a turnover of something like 10 teachers per year…speaks volumes about how terrible it was. Some school leaders are rather cunning, they “punish” you if you want to head to another school by delaying your transfer, saying they have a shortage and only letting you transfer 3-6 months later. This disadvantages you greatly in the next ranking cycle at all the school you go to next. Teachers are often emotionally exploited by parents and school leaders by their “guilt tripping” that you have a duty of care to the students, so much so that you have a greater responsibility for their care than even the parents.
