Toxic workplace environment, poor leadership at top and mid level management
23 Feb 2023 - Executive in SingaporeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Wonderful colleagues from all walks of life. Diverse working culture.
Cons
Poor leadership. No guidance for work issues. Lower than private sector salaries. basic amenities not available to officers (eg carpark, and self-supply and self paid pantry welfare). Toxic attitude and culture from management. As much as the executives and ground forces remain resilient, the high number of attrition is largely due to management's toxic mentality and micromanagement on working procedures, enforcing military culture within the public service, and while there is more, i do not recommend job seekers to consider MOM/ACE as a ideal workplace to begin their public service career.

Contrary practice for Ministry that does not advocate fair employment practices
11 Oct 2022 - OfficerRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
1. Hiring process conducted fairly 2. One of the key ministries in Singapore
Cons
1. Toxic culture and regimental culture and nothing professional and corporate 2. Poor leadership by ex-armchair generals who advocates favouritism, unfair employee assessment and poor performance as yardstick to displace or transfer subordinates or eventually lead to non-renewal contract of service of employment 3. Lack of proper mentorship and expect ‘plug and play’ self-starter for new on board employees 4. Discrimination practice among leaders such as second language capabilities, school attended and previous work expertise 5. Lack of fair employment practice, which the Ministry is supposed to be the governing body of fair employment practices in Singapore! Does not practice what they have preached 6. Human Resource is also weak especially when feedback on unfair employment practices, the matter got sweep under the carpet 7. Ever changing of working arrangement and off day pattern

Pros
Standard Government benefits Hybrid Work Arrangement
Cons
Workplace and culture are toxic in WPD. No matter how diligent or competent you are, there is very little appreciation for work that is done well; you will probably merely be perceived as carrying out your obligations. You will need to use your critical thinking skills as the management and your reporting officers usually Assistant Directors cannot provide a clear solution most of the time. When something goes wrong or when the outcome is less than ideal, management likes to find fault and blame it on hindsight. There aren't many capable and diligent coworkers. Most employees lack knowledge and competence, partly due to the frequent RESIGNATION OF STAFF. Smart and diligent employees are given additional work without receiving any promotion. Staff that are incompetent and lazy wouldn't really face consequences either, and there isn't much of a distinction between performance levels and promotions. Senior management are hesitant to respond or commit to a answer, a lot SOP to follow and red tapes. The majority of supervisor are afraid to speaking up for their employees as they only care about their own reputation and KPI’s. Those who do speak up are either forced to leave or given task way beyond one capabilities to manage forcing the staff to leave. Toxic culture when the lowest-paid employees endure suffering and perform menial tasks without being appreciated. Micromanagement, a TOP-down strategy, theory talks and KPIs are everywhere. For Lower to Middle Management, there has been hardly any advancement or improvement in their careers in the long run. The pay is below average for a Ministry Per-say raises are modest, and the promotion process moves slowly. Without a promotion, it's not uncommon to reach the pay cap. Even if you are capable and have a degree, Middle Management are treated like slaves and there is no job advancement or opportunity. Feedback and speaking up are viewed as a danger and a challenge to the status quo at this place. Only "yes-men" and "yes-women" are liked by their superiors. Without any practical experience or real-world viability, management prefers to employ paper/theory speak.

When they need they beg. When covid over bye bye
29 Jul 2022 - Housing OfficerRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The only good thing is the lifelong friends you get to make from all walks of life fighting alongside you to contain covid in dorms. Such camaraderie only forged in wartime.
Cons
ACE group is the unwanted step child you only need when in times of war(covid). Full time "MOMers" treat ACE like pariahs. ACE Management ran by ex uniform rejects who think they can make new start using their outdated uniform management uniform style. 1 example is changing of rosters on a whim. No room for feedback or suggestions. (They will wayang and pretend to hold huddles. Then they will say i hear you "but...") Its my way or the highway style. You've already made up your mind, soo dont bother with the wayang. We all KNOW. COs fighting among themselves to get recognition. Endless useless "innovation" projects just for the sake of getting placements and recognition. COs will use outdated toxic terms such as grading, ranking and placements. Key taboo words in modern corporate world. But hey dinosaurs cant learn new things.
