The only constant is change

Pros

The product and process at MycoWorks are very unique, interesting, and technically challenging. The employees are smart and wonderful coworkers. There is plenty of opportunity for cross-functional collaboration and innovation. Additionally, the opportunity to work in a pilot plant and to scale up to full plant operation is very valuable. The benefits are good although fairly standard for biotech startups, but the work-life balance is notably better than many companies and the company culture genuinely allows reasonable usage of unlimited PTO by salaried workers- I’d estimate that ~4 weeks of PTO per year was pretty typical, but no one was keeping tabs.

Cons

While everyone says the only constant at startups is change, MycoWorks takes that to the extreme. The biggest issue is the erratic decision-making and frequent pivots by upper management, seemingly without consideration of data or a long-term logistical/business strategy. There is also a lack of thoughtful and consistent organization and structure, from department organization to business management systems, making it more challenging than it needs to be to complete basic tasks. Upper management is very unbalanced, weighing heavily on manufacturing and having little to no scientific representation since the CSO position has been vacant for almost a year. Overall the upper management seems to be lacking long-term vision for development of the technology and product.

Thank you for your thoughtful review. As you mentioned, scaling up is a tremendous opportunity —one we feel humbled and privileged to embark on as a company. MycoWorks is a unique enterprise in that we’re doing something that has never been done before in history: commercially scaling the production of Fine Mycelium, a completely new category of material. As a company we bring together biotechnology expertise with innovations in manufacturing, process engineering and product development in ways that have never been done before. Some speed bumps along the way are inevitable in this process—but effective, transparent communication and employee empowerment in decision-making are high priorities for us, and we are absolutely committed to learning from the feedback we receive, including yours. As MycoWorks grows, so has our capacity for long-range vision in our organizational design, product strategy and technology development—and the input and agency of all team members has been essential to this. With the recent addition of our passionate VP of Technology Development and other strong additions to our team, we’re now positioned to bring technology development and manufacturing into closer collaboration and alignment. With that in mind, technology development efforts have been and continue to be laser focused on the product and process improvements that will enable our scale-up towards mass manufacturing. That is because MycoWorks absolutely prioritizes our product's commercial value and availability to our consumers, the brands we partner with and their customers. This can sometimes call for us to change course and re-prioritize goals which in turn, demands that we communicate effectively to our teams. To this end, it has been and will continue to be a foundational priority that all team members at MycoWorks are given the information and context they need to thrive in their roles and to understand any changes that impact them and their teams.

Upper Management Doesn’t Trust Their Workers

Pros

Coworkers. I worked with some of the smartest, most dedicated engineers, scientists, and technicians that I have ever met. I was truly sad whenever one of them left and when I left. I believed in the work I was doing and the product was so unique that I was excited to talk about it with other people.

Cons

The COO controls the company and if you didn’t work at P&G with him before, he won’t listen to you. He pushes out any engineer or scientist who challenges his opinions or showed him data he didn’t like. He sacrificed any chance of long term success for the company by completely gutting the R&D team.

Thank you for your review. We value feedback and take action on what we hear from both our current and former employees. As MycoWorks continues to grow and expand its locations, we constantly aim to strengthen our leadership team and our communications with all employees. Your experience at MycoWorks sounds unfortunate, as it seems you really enjoyed your team here. We did experience a challenging period with our R&D team as we sought the right leadership, as well as the right work environment. Although our annual survey results were above and beyond our highest benchmarks, we did hear from some employees who had lost trust with leadership in the midst of these changes. We regret this, and have taken action to address these areas of growth for the company. We now have a hands-on, forward-looking VP of R&D and a fully resourced location for this team. We have learned some hard lessons on how to manage change while scaling the company, and we have stepped up how we communicate change to all teams. Today, we are continuing to ensure our long term success with a remarkable and passionate team of collaborators. We thank you for your work here and we wish you the best in your next work experience.

Pros

Life was never boring at MycoWorks. Roles and strategy of the company changed a lot, which was quite exciting at times. Most roles were pretty busy, which is great if you do not enjoy being bored. The company experienced rapid growth during 2021 which brough structure and more resources to the company. The company did a good job hiring individual contributors. I truly enjoyed everyone I worked with.

Cons

Well…there was always some sort of rift between the Operations team and the R&D team. It led to three “waves” of resignations from those in R&D over the span of two years. Initially, it seemed like typical work misunderstanding and drama, but it became increasingly clear that the company’s C-Suite did not care for whatever business strategy R&D brought to the table. Not only has this led to resignations, but the ability to understand and improve the product has been severely hampered. As mentioned, the company got more structured as it grew, and while this brought benefits, it also brought disadvantages. The roles got less exciting. The ability to iterate fast grew more difficult, because there were so many people and documents, and even if you did those right and got approval to move forward, the Chief Manufacturing/Operating Officer micromanaged so much to the point entire plans would get squashed.

Thank you for your feedback and the awesome David Bowie-titled review. We take your feedback seriously and are taking actions to improve work life for all our teams, including R&D. As you mentioned, life here at MycoWorks is never boring, but beneath the excitement there are very real stressors that come along with such fast growth. We saw this especially with our R&D team. Our learning point is that we should have surfaced these issues and acted sooner. We are striving to improve this in the future. Now that some key changes have been implemented, including a new VP of R&D and the launch of a new worksite for the team, we hope to stay on track with work that is exciting and challenging. We are actively inviting more feedback on how we handled these issues, and will be steadfast in listening and acting on the outcomes. Thank you again for your feedback.
