Pros

Benefits slightly above average. Depending on the group, working from home and flexible hours are a common thing. Regulated industry makes it interesting.

Cons

Toxic culture, everyone wants to leave and/or is miserable. Good ole boys club rules apply, reduced opportunities minorities. Females systematically make less across the company. Management are bosses, not leaders. Most rule on hierarchy and authority instead of leadership. Leaders will push their subordinates under the hus when needed and take all the credit. Promotions and raises 100% based on relations; good work will get you nowhere, knowing the right people will sky-rocket you to the top, crossing the wrong people will get you fired or demoted. Forced bell curve in yearly reviews, so again, its all on how chumy you are with your managers. Absolutely no career path, no lead positions between analyst role and manager role. Re-orgs are constant, leading to demotions or job loses yearly for the last 2-3 years. LOTS of inexperience UK ex-pats in top management positions that can do no wrong, don't need to do anything but get to call the shots. Rules don't apply equally, you'd almost think there's a cast system in place. Office politics and preferential treatment is such a standard that you will want to run out screaming after your first week since to get your work done, you have to not only do the actual work but collaborating with others without ruffling anyones feathers. Since everyone wants to leave finance, there are many stories of internal moves blocked by finance managers to force their employees to stay within their teams.

Pros

Working there will shorten your life expectancy, reducing the overall time you suffer.

Cons

Do you like disorder? Do you like misery? How about constantly being emotionally beaten down until you've become someone you don't recognize anymore? Well I have the place for you! It's National Grid! The hours are long, and the competence is short. Over my time there I saw vicious bullying, disrespect of subordinates, impossible hours with no thanks given to the employees, an entire team turned over within a one year period due to mistreatment, and most of all I saw a group of apathetic people worked into the ground by unyielding cruelty on the part of management. I wouldn't send my worst enemy to work here, which is ironic, since so many of my worst enemies already work at this company! Life can be beautiful, and full of surprises. But you will find no beautiful surprises at this company! The only surprises you will find at National Grid are constantly clogged toilets, and managers who find inventive ways to tear your soul to pieces. In short, I implore you to never work here. My therapist says that in a mere 20 years I may be able to get over working at National Grid, but I know as I lay sleepless at night picturing walking through those awful revolving doors every morning, that some experiences can haunt you for a lifetime. Also, this company stinks!

Form over function... to an extreme.

Pros

Job security. Pretty good benefits. Some of the people are pretty nice.

Cons

I should have heeded the red flags... It took five months from when I applied to when I got my offer and at multiple times I was sure I had either not moved on to the next round or had been forgotten. On my first day I went through a short HR orientation and then was told to wait in the lobby for my manager. An hour later someone came to greet me who was not the manager who I had interviewed with, who's offer I had accepted. This manager told me that I had been moved to a different team, and would be doing a different job. In the ten months that I worked there I found the following: The culture, at least in the department that I worked in, is horrible. Some managers are better than others, but it seemed like none of them were too interested in sticking up for their people, and at times would throw their own employees under the bus. Division of responsibilities is terrible. Some people work 70+ hours a week while others on the same team have maybe 15hrs worth of work to do a week. Zero empathy for employees. I was told numerous times that I could not take time off, not because it would hinder my performance, but because it would "look bad." One of these times was a borderline medical emergency for which I was offering to take PTO and was still denied. The bonus structure is ok until review time, where I got a fine review (some points for improvement, but overall good) but then was told that this only warranted a 25% payout of my bonus. In my ten months there I only had one 1-on-1 meeting with my manager at 8 months in (the company mandated annual review) despite asking repeatedly to have one earlier. During my review process I was repeatedly told that I was making more than I was supposed to and that whomever had approved my salary had not followed protocol. Many internal company functions (IT, HR, Facilities) were so awful that they very seriously hindered employees ability to do business effectively or efficiently. There is almost zero on-boarding structure and it you are considered lucky if you have a functioning computer with email by the end of your first week.
