Lots of wasted potential

Pros

Fantastic mission; when effective, it saves lives.

Cons

The organisation has turned into a nepotistic dictatorship. Those who declare unconditional loyalty to the Executive Director, regardless of whether they are competent and even regardless of whether they assaulted other employees (really!), are promoted. Those who are perceived to criticise the Executive Director- even in the slightest- are bullied and fired, regardless of their competence or dedication to the work.

Pros

I worked with Nonviolent Peaceforce South Sudan (NPSS) 2016 /17 and Nonviolent Peaceforce Phiilippines (NPP) 2017. The civilian protection work it was doing was amazing and cutting edge,

Cons

The management was terrible. The CEO intervened and just sacked people on a whim. I was sacked on my birthday. They kept on staff that failed to make emergency referrals of tens of thousands of people because they were connected to donors. I have the evidence if you want it. Sacked staff for serious offences without evidence or investigation.

Not a safe space

Pros

It has a promising program framework, which can be improved. The local staff in any country programs are talented and dedicated. The founders who came from peace activism movements are open and approachable.

Cons

Very cavalier such that sexual abuse is tolerated, particularly when done by Northern people with barely a sense of Southern solidarity . The inability of some expatriate staff to manage their sexual needs is glossed over, that it disrupts confidence and team-building among staff. There are often doubts rather than a positive attitude over local capacity. There is often a backlash for criticism, however positively communicated so people tend to keep quiet as they have jobs to secure.
