Pros

There really aren't a lot. There were lots of opportunities for training and the occasional pizza lunch, but other than that, most of my comments belong in the "Cons" column.

Cons

If you aren't a member of the "in" crowd, you get left behind quite a bit. The salary was very low compared to other similar companies in the area. The team tended to blame a lot of current problems on previous employees who weren't there to defend themselves or justify their decisions. A huge focus on tracking customers' every move and so desperate to be a large publication that they tried to emulate every practice that every successful magazine did. The team I was on was condescending at every opportunity and when something went wrong, regardless of whether it was within my realm of responsibility or not, I was always the first to be blamed because I was one the newer people, even after i had been there almost a year. Ideas weren't considered and questions often were met with "because I said so". This made for a HUGE feeling that I was just a grunt rather than an actual member of a team.

Pros

There are some people who really have it made at this company. People who are very charming and good at giving the appearance of doing a lot of work go very far here. If you stroke the egos of management, they will not notice that you dump all your work on everyone else and actually don't do any work yourself. If you're charming, it's really easy to have management convinced that some of the people who are actually doing the work are the ones not doing anything. Management are not very perceptive and just don't notice when someone is pulling one over on them. So if you're both lazy AND charming - I say go for it. Get a job here. You'll love it.

Cons

The atmosphere is very sexist. There have been issues with sexual harassment separate from the overall sexism problem. It's very difficult to get management to believe the extent of what is really going on there. If you try to bring things to their attention, which they encourage, you actually end up bullied by management in the long run. The staff doing all of the work doesn't get noticed for it and are withheld promotions while the laziest of staff gets promotions right and left. Staff members are freely allowed to bully other staff members. Men are freely allowed to demote women and promote men. The CEO cuts in line when his entire staff is waiting in a long line at a hotel to pick up their valet cars or check in to hotels - doesn't even know the names of half of his staff and somehow other management thinks this is "cute." The CEO and his family get carted around town in a limo, while the rest of the staff has to stay in crappy hotels 15 miles away and cab in at 5am because they are too cheap to let the staff stay closer to event venues. This company is so dysfunctional, that I am 100% convinced that upper management wrote the only positive review here - some of that review sounds like what they said when I was hired verbatim.

Review for Reston office: Great benefits, tough office politics

Pros

The benefits are amazing at PMMI (insurance, staff events, gym etc.) and I got along well with a lot of other employees. A few managers are great with providing new training and opportunities but I didn't find this to be common among most managers. Overall, a good stepping stone for some but an unlikely long-term career past 1-2 years for most.

Cons

The office politics can be exhausting after a long period of working here. Many of the managers are not well trained for their projects and do not have strong leadership for the individuals they oversee. HR is not effective; many coworkers who brought up issues with their managers or other concerns were not taken seriously and nothing was kept confidential from executives (and even other staff). There are some issues of sexism and harassment that have gone unaddressed which can make for an uncomfortable work environment, especially with business travel.
