Pros

work/LIFE balance. Yes, capitalization matters. The thing they do best is pucker up when you need money for ANYTHING. Training? Forget it. A new laptop? Yours is from 2010, it's fine. Furniture for a tiny break room in a building with no other options? Not just no but HECK no.

Cons

The company is privately held by its founders from the 1990s. They sit in Hollywood MD, far removed (in more ways than one) from the cloud business unit. They've delegate most of the day to day operations (anything except discretionary/morale money) to a non-technical VP (also the company CFO) with an entrenched micromanagement streak. People who don't want to do anything can skate for an entire career. Those who want to do something leave. Management humors whiners. Change is thwarted by any member of the "good old boys" club who thinks their turf might be threatened. Look at our website: small 1990s DoD contractor, determined to stay that way. A dozen attempts to modernize it were thwarted by whiners who thought their turf was being threatened. The 1990s DoD mindset it pervasive: "It has worked this way for 20 years, there's no reason to change it." "We want to change, we want to improve, we want to get better" - if only the actions aligned with the words.

Pros

1- They are working on the company's image. 2- Starting salary is competitive

Cons

In my opinion, the company failed to provide the necessary tools and support for me to effectively perform my job, resulting in overtasking, feeling constantly overwhelmed, and extended working hours. My manager claimed to have no time for employee performance reviews, discussions about pay raises, or career advancement conversations. I felt that this lack of support and guidance hindered my professional growth and left me feeling undervalued and unsupported. The team was perpetually caught up in crisis management, with no downtime or opportunity to recharge. I believe that this continuous stream of chronic stress with little acknowledgment of our efforts and magnification of our mistakes created a toxic environment and hindered our career advancement. The high turnover rate within our program was alarming. While turnover is common in any organization, the consistently short tenures of employees in their positions indicate a deeper mismanagement problem. In conclusion, my time at SMX was extremely disheartening as I encountered a highly toxic work environment, inadequate tools and support, a lack of recognition for my efforts, and the constant burden of picking up the slack due to frequent employee turnover. These issues significantly impacted my morale and hindered my professional growth. Unfortunately, I cannot in good conscience recommend SMX as an employer due to their failure to address these fundamental problems and cultivate a more positive work culture.

Pros

Most folks are very smart and great to work with. Wide array of clients and digital needs keeps the work interesting.

Cons

Ownership and upper management are short-sighted and focused purely on the bottom-line. Because of this, top talent is difficult to land or retain as there are company-wide project overheads that inhibit the ability to adequately compensate employees. The company business model is focused purely on building up the overall value of the company so it can be sold off for as much money as possible. At an employee level, the morale is terrible and there's very little growth potential unless you're fortunate to be connected with mid/upper management. Training is highly encouraged by management, but comes at the cost of your potential bonus. Opportunities to apply learning from completed trainings/certifications are extremely limited because that type of work is not billable to a client.
