Good people doing their best in a toxic burnout culture

Pros

The best coworkers I've had in my life, and it can truly feel like a community. COVID has made that more difficult, but everyone has done their best to remain centered and compassionate in hard times. When the office is open, it's a great space and having all the dogs around is wonderful. The benefits are strong for the company's size, with matching 401K, subsidized healthcare costs, decent PTO after you pass the first year mark, and profit sharing - all offered to part-time employees, too. Producing and marketing products that bring good into the world is very fulfilling, and our customers love us. Flexible schedules are an option under most managers.

Cons

Almost every single team is understaffed and underpaid, making it near impossible to take advantage of the work/life balance the company loves to emphasize. If you're anything less than director or VP level, expect to be compensated well under market rate, and the attitude from management if you protest is "you should feel lucky to work here." Raises and internal promotions are practically nonexistant due to a "salary squad" that has far too much power and is focused solely on costs instead of factoring in talent retention. The founder/CEO can (and does) make huge decisions without input from the rest of the leadership team, causing chaos and a culture of fear. HR is disorganized and there's very little in terms of clear onboarding and training - what you get highly depends on who your manager is and how much bandwidth they have to get you up to speed.

Pros

There are a number of truly spiritual-minded employees, though they are mostly not in upper management positions, and are not valued for their dedication to the company mission, or its ideals.

Cons

If you compare this company to any widget-selling enterprise, it fairs pretty well. The dilemma arises when you expect it to be better, to do things differently, to actually practice what it preaches (or rather, what it sells in its teachings). With that method of measurement, it falls miserably short. Does it consistently promote from within? Does it pay a fairer wage in these extremely economically challenging times? Does it truly promote a healthy work/life balance? Does it cultivate equality and respect for every individual, or is it run top down? Does it operate with integrity, or does it engage in questionable business practices, such as interviewing company employees with no intention of promoting them? Does it make significant charitable contributions to the less fortunate?

Pros

Open hearted and caring coworkers - some of the best people I've ever worked with The company's mission is to make a positive impact on the world Diversified and multifaceted - there is a lot to learn and absorb Flexible remote work and PTO policies

Cons

Lack of coherent management, especially at the Leadership Team level Moral gaslighting in the form of being told to accept poor working conditions because the work itself is for a greater good Classic CEO/Founder problem - all vision, no concrete planning Upper and middle management are generally unable to manage their teams effectively because they are constantly being pulled into project level work Very little accountability for those who don't pull their weight Zero onboarding standards or procedures across the board Low pay, high workload
