Surprise surprise

Pros

Young international environment, good food, and talented people all over the place are certainly a big plus. These were the good surprises.

Cons

There were a few more of the bad surprises though. The company culture is very specific and if you cannot accumulate to it, there is no place for you there. Work always comes first, and even though the product is there for users so they can focus on things that are actually important, the workplace does not allow you to focus on much more than just work. This varies from department to department of course, but generally if you don't become like others, you either stay an outsider or might get shamed. Co-worker shaming is very usual, as much from peers as it is even more so from management. Very hard to get appreciated here or feel like you ever do enough.

You live inside a bubble

Pros

You are definitely working with smart people and the project "changing the banking industry from the inside" is just amazing.

Cons

There are just sooo many rules. For example you need to be at the office before 9 or you'll have lunch duty. You can't leave before 6, unless your manager makes an exception. You need to send a status update every day so management can check up on what you're doing even though they're selling it as you keeping track on your own effectiveness. Even though, when they don't agree with a point in your status update they'll email you about it to check why you've done something a certain way or why you've made a certain decision. When you're there for a while you start believing this is normal, but when you're talking to friends that are working elsewhere you are reminded that it's not. Not even in big corporates.

Good projects, terrible work culture

Pros

- Flat hierarchy - Good technical level

Cons

- Terrible management. - You are charged for a boring, repetitive lunch. And although you are the one that pays for it, you get management stubborn punishments like "No more milk for anyone for the next couple months as someone left it outside of the fridge again". - Extensive hours that are not even appreciated. No one will thank you for staying until late, and they will complain if you don't. - Total lack of respect for free time. If you don't answer a non-urgent email on sunday, you will get some shame thrown on monday.
