Supporting our communities while we work is integral to our culture at Smith+Nephew. Our Talent Acquisition team in Costa Rica took a pause from their annual kick off meeting to help clear trails at Poás Volcano National Park, starting the year with a moment of giving back.
Our company values of Care, Courage and Collaboration mean we look after both each other and our communities while we work. As part of the annual Australia and New Zealand Kick-Off Meeting, our teams were challenged to flex their teamwork skills by building skateboards together. The finished boards were donated to families in need, transforming team building into social impact.
“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is ‘What are you doing for others?” These powerful words from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. resonate with our company culture of Care, Collaboration and Courage. To honor his message on Martin Luther King Day, volunteers from our sites across the US came together for a day of service to write letters and cards to local senior citizens. Over 600 handwritten cards were sent in total, helping to bring a little light to someone’s day.
October is globally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In recognition, women’s wellbeing has taken center stage at our sites across the world from Kuala Lumpur (MY) to Watford (UK).
Our teams have been lending a hand in their local office communities this week with their 8 hours of paid volunteering leave. A team from our Penang office in Malaysia got stuck into a beach clean-up at nearby Batu Ferringhi, clearing rubbish and helping restore the site’s natural beauty for all to enjoy.
We were thrilled to celebrate World Mental Health Day by helping break a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for lose users in a mental health awareness lesson! Partnering with Think Mental Health, Hull College and Think Cloud, we joined hundreds of people from around the globe to learn about starting conversations and checking in on others. When everyone’s at their best, we’re a far better company. We're proud to have been part of such an important session dedicated to inspiring positive change.
We’ve been out and about this week putting our 8-hours of paid volunteering leave to good use… Some happy hikers from our Scotland-based team put their best foot forward for Day One Trauma Support's Kiltwalk. They walked 21-miles across the city and its coastlines, raising nearly £2000 for the charity.
We’re delighted to share that we have been recognized as Community Programme of the Year at the UK Social Mobility Awards in London 🏆 This award reflects the real impact of our STEM Careers Outreach Programme in Hull and Croxley, tackling barriers to accessing a career in STEM and showcasing opportunities in our industry to young people from disadvantaged or migrant backgrounds. We're excited to continue our programme to reach even more innovators of the future.
We strive to live our culture of care, courage and collaboration in our communities. Some keen builders from our Memphis site picked up tools and put on hard hats to lend a hand at a construction site with Habitat for Humanity a charity that constructs affordable homes to tackle housing poverty.
We are proud to have received the Innovation Award at the UK-Spain Business Awards this week. It recognizes the work of our Smith+Nephew Spain team in supporting healthcare professionals to restore health and mobility for their patients, enabling them to live a Life Unlimited. Earlier this year, we opened our new office and Competence Center in Barcelona, a state-of-the-art facility equipped with advanced technology. More than just a workplace, it has become a meeting point where bioengineers, clinicians, and healthcare managers share knowledge, experience, and ideas to drive forward new solutions that make a real difference in healthcare worldwide.
