Both interviewers asked why I left my first job (where I'd been for 17 years). Once I explained, they kept digging as though there was more to the story. They spent more time on that than asking about my qualifications for the job.

I explained that the company, a not-for-profit, had been floundering for years and the last-ditch project I worked on that would have put us towards the black didn't pan out. The CEO (whom I reported to) let me go and I received a generous severance. Then I continued to do contract work for the company for three years after that until they merged with a rival company. I let them know I was still on good terms with the company and even provided the CEO's contact info as a personal reference, but they continued to question about it as though they didn't believe me.
