What do you look for in a good software design specification?

This IS a good question for the role. However, they seemed to have a narrow, preconceived notion of specs, and my answer didn't immediately fit the square hole they had in mind. I understand good specs because I've both worked off them (good and bad) and created them more than a hundred times in the very environment I was being interviewed for, with amazing results. However, I couldn't seem to satisfy what the interviewer was hoping to hear. I offered to provide samples of my work, but they didn't seem to want them. I wondered in the end if the interviewer had only intermediate-level experience and couldn't understand the more elegant approaches that are now used in the industry.
