Pros

Having had been with Character Lab for nearly 5 years, I can say without a doubt that C-Lab is a great place to work. With a strong onboarding process, new team members are exposed to all aspects of the organization, and incrementally take on more responsibility while learning what the org does and how it operates. Compared to other nonprofits, C-Lab earns high marks for transparency (around pay, decision-making, and strategy) and team members have access to all their colleagues, from the CEO all the way down. C-Lab values work-life balance, and offers a tremendous amount of flexibility — while everyone is required to be online during a 4-hour window each day, they have the flexibility to work a schedule that works best for them.

Cons

While C-Lab strongly values professional development, it could be clearer about accessing external PD opportunities. One way to do this, might be to have a fixed amount that all team members can access annually. Even with the high level of transparency, there are times when there's a lack of clarity from leadership as to how some decisions are made (e.g., a shift in operational strategy). C-Lab and its leadership has made huge strides in this, but it could be clearer at times.

Pros

Character Lab was a highly effective and collaborative team, with great use of communications and productivity systems. I learned how to maximize using Asana and Slack for task management, so that I could use deep work time. While you have ownership over your own projects and domains, you also have the opportunity to do a variety of cross-functional projects on a quarterly basis. This keeps things fresh and interesting, and you learn new skills by continuing to change up your portfolio of projects. Emphasis on UX helped keep both internal teammates' and external partners' experience front and center. There was always a productive and empathetic approach to change within the organization. The team does a great job cultivating a remote-first environment by prioritizing relationships, well being, and whole-team/small team/1-on-1/independent time. There was a good balance between all of it. Genuine connection to DEI, including dedicated time for cultural holidays & events (with stipends to support local businesses), plus facilitated conversations about race and racism.

Cons

Disconnect between leadership team and the rest of the staff sometimes created confusion around work priorities, but this did not detract from the overall work experience.
