Pros
Friendly team, creative environment, opportunity to support young people
Cons
I worked with hideout on a mural project where I delivered creative sessions and began planning sketching and painting a large-scale mural. From the outset, a budget was mentioned and I was told sessions would be paid. I committed weeks of my time, travelling over an hour each way, preparing designs, and starting the mural—expecting fair compensation.
However, after investing significant time and effort, I was suddenly told the work was voluntary, something that had never been agreed. When I attempted to raise concerns and ask for clarification, I was ignored completely.
As a freelance artist, this experience was incredibly disheartening. I was already willing to work for far less than my usual rate to support a youth-focused organisation. To then be dismissed and left unpaid is unacceptable. My contribution, time, and professional skills were not respected.
