Pros

Working with young people and on big projects. The youth centre has a bigger budget than others

Cons

high turn over of staff. Not much room for progression, poor wages, lack of organisation from senior managers. Senior management completely inappropriate at times towards women on multiple occasions. On one occasion member of SLT was suspended for this and although it was deemed he had committed serious misconduct was only given a warning. This left the victim feeling like their voice did not matter and really effected their mental health.

We appreciate your feedback and we're sorry to hear about your experience. We are committed to building Hideout Youth Zone as a great place to work and continue to focus efforts on giving our employees development opportunities. Since opening the charity to the public in September 2020, several of our employees have already progressed from fixed-term to permanent positions, part-time to full-time and several others have also progressed to more senior roles within the organisation. We are also proud to be accredited as a Real Living Wage employer and to also offer additional benefits including an Employee Assistance Programme, ongoing training and development opportunities and a salary banding and pay scale system which is reviewed annually. Regarding your comments about senior management, we would welcome the opportunity to have a confidential discussion with you, or any employee about concerns so that we can address these. Please contact enquiries@hideoutyouthzone.org and include 'FAO Adam Farricker' in the subject line, if you would like to discuss further.

Pros

Friendly team, creative environment, opportunity to support young people

Cons

I worked with hideout on a mural project where I delivered creative sessions and began planning sketching and painting a large-scale mural. From the outset, a budget was mentioned and I was told sessions would be paid. I committed weeks of my time, travelling over an hour each way, preparing designs, and starting the mural—expecting fair compensation. However, after investing significant time and effort, I was suddenly told the work was voluntary, something that had never been agreed. When I attempted to raise concerns and ask for clarification, I was ignored completely. As a freelance artist, this experience was incredibly disheartening. I was already willing to work for far less than my usual rate to support a youth-focused organisation. To then be dismissed and left unpaid is unacceptable. My contribution, time, and professional skills were not respected.
