Pros

I met coworkers who became great friends

Cons

I’ve been putting off writing this review for a long time because it’s so unenjoyable to think about so much of my time working here. The management at JML is shockingly bad. I experienced so much manipulation and gas lighting, some of which was extremely overt and some of which I am still uncovering a year after leaving. This is a really strange place where good and honest workers are used, disrespected and blamed for the company’s short comings, while those who are willing to cut corners will actually have an easier time getting ahead. The stories I would tell my friends and family from my time working here literally made their jaws drop and ask me to please quit. I tried to stick around and give constructive feedback to managers, airing both problems and possible solutions, but absolutely nothing would get management to take any responsibility for the issues that were making employees so miserable. Unfortunately I am aware that even after losing employee after employee after employee (the turnover rate is ridiculous) management still hasn’t tried to listen to their employees and has even doubled down in the blaming and manipulation of their workers. I just wanted to garden and learn about gardening. The bad management and sneaky behavior just overshadowed everything good about the job.

Pros

JML has a great and friendly staff. Some management has changed since I worked there but the new additions were my direct supervisors and they were a joy to work with.

Cons

JML is a landscaping company so it requires a lot of physical labor.

Pros

I began working at JML as an installation builder. The company prioritizes employee skills development and I learned how to build decks, patios, arbors, install lighting and irrigation systems, and care for many species of plants all in my first year. The nature of the work is physical and can be challenging but was always extremely rewarding when you can step back and see what you built! Opportunities to present photos of our projects and share knowledge in company-wide meetings was always encouraging and supportive. Later on as an installation supervisor I was given the opportunity to take on more responsibility, train newcomers, and further grow my income. JML's clear path for career development and organizational structure far exceeded what I have encountered at other jobs. Setting objectively measurable goals with my manager allowed me to achieve them at my own pace and quickly grow my skills, position, and income. My experiences working with my managers, coworkers, and trainees was always collaborative with a sense of intrigue to solve problems and create the highest quality gardens for the benefit of people and nature. As division manager of garden care I could not have been more proud of the work ethic exhibited by employees at all levels of the company. We invested heavily in time and resources to train new gardeners, have regular check ins, and provide flexibility when personal matters arose. That was the company culture in my experience- working hard, collaborating, and taking care of our people: employees, subcontractors, and clients alike. I only left JML to move closer to my family on the east coast, or I would still be proudly working with them today. Working at JML to build and care for so many amazing gardens throughout San Francisco will always be a major highlight of my life.

Cons

Working in the rain presents a unique set of challenges, but nothing a good set of rain gear and can-do attitude can't solve.
