What is a Robotics Engineer?

Robotics engineers create and maintain machines that perform functions in place of humans. They may work in the agriculture, military, manufacturing, or medical industries and conceive of new and innovative uses for robots. They design and improve robots for existing systems and repair and maintain industrial robots. Robotics engineers are highly creative and self-motivated with advanced mathematics, applied physical science, and computer science skills.

Robotics engineers read, write, analyze, and interpret technical procedures and schematics; they define problems and collect data, facts, and conclusions from their research. They write software and build electronics and design mechanisms. They are responsible for the research, development, and maintenance of robotics systems and components, and they evaluate and calibrate systems to ensure maximum efficiency. They troubleshoot robotic systems and their applications and maintain accurate documentation and records for them as well. A robotics engineer needs a bachelor's degree in automation, mechanics, robotics, or electrical engineering with a minimum of two years of industry experience. They need proficiency in drafting programs including AutoCAD and strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills.
