How are the career development opportunities at REI?

Poor communication, lack of direction, dwindling career advancement opportunities, dwindling summit pay structure

There are some really talented people who work at REI.

The continued lack of financial success and clear direction has completely diminished the credibility of executive leadership. There's no good reason to join or stay with REI - we had no raises this year, bonuses were paid out at around 25%, no significant career development resources or programs, etc. No incentive to stay except to "fuel our purpose." I can't pay my mortgage with purpose. In HR it's worse. Our CPO (her first CPO gig) has made a mess of the department. She has zero empathy or people skills and all she does is implement things she's done at other orgs. So you'll spend your best effort collecting data and making a solid recommendation, only to hear - no, we're just going to do this/do it this way all while preaching agile, human-centered design. Do what I say, not what I do. Honestly the leader level down isn't much better because they can't influence or argue with her.

None really. But better budget for traiing

Great benefits, health insurance, health savings account, 401K

Company has become increasingly focused on profits over people. Takes weeks to get hired, then "full-time" is typically 32 hours or less, work hours can be highly variable, limited advancement opportunities.

Great perks and opportunities to learn from fellow outdoorsy people -- both customers and colleagues

Hours can be difficult and black out dates for taking time off are frustrating.

Middle management and below were all fantastic! It's a shame that upper management wouldn't listen to them.

Greenwashing, empty virtue signaling, low morale, no growth opportunities

There are a lot of opportunities for gear discounts.

Low pay and difficult schedules.

Coworkers are always friendly and willing to lend a hand

They would rather hire someone with no experience whatsoever than move/train you in another department. Management will ALWAYS throw you under the bus and are incompetent (save for a select few). Base raises on how many sales you can get for memberships and constantly push for that rather than actually focusing on customer service. No growth opportunities
