What is working from home like at Severn Trent?

Great office environment. The offices are clean, well furnished and have canteens with a variety of options even including breakfast at some sites. Everyone gets along very well in the office and my personal team are very close knit and I feel part of the team. Work laptop and phone provided free of charge - at least in this role - which gives me great flexibility to work from home or collaboratively in the office. For such a large business, the admin is handled quite well, communication is usually well provided. A large pool of opportunities: site visits, volunteering days, charity events etc. Provide a range of schemes, such as the apprenticeship that I'm on alongside Graduate schemes with a massive intake each year, giving a significant number of people a great opportunity.

Communication between different areas of the business can sometimes be difficult as the business is so large, and has so many employees.

I’ve been at Severn Trent for 15 years and believe is a great place to work. I’ve done many different technical and leadership roles across the company and believe the people and culture are fantastic, really supportive and engaging and have always enjoy coming to work everyday. It’s an inclusive company, with Executives and Senior Management accessible (not hierarchical) but also empowering for decision making and team management. There’s lots of opportunities to learn new skills and grow your career, for anyone with the right attitude and commitment. It also has a great rewards package (holidays, pensions etc) and is flexible to suit individual and team requirements.

No negatives from my perspective. I appreciate some companies may work from home more, but we can and do when we need to, but prefer being in an office environment most of the time as it’s more engaging for problem solving, sharing ideas and developing team and business relationships.

I have worked for Severn Trent for 7 years and have found it to be the perfect place when balancing work and personal life. I have worked in another company where personal life was secondary due to the heavy workload and reactive work. Within STW it is a lot more planned for the works I do on the capital projects. I have also got the ability to work from home and we do not have to worry about redundancies as other company employees do.

Employees do not tend to remain in their role for a long period - or it is rare to see people stay in their role for a very long time.

Subsidised coffee at work Mat leave is now decent and in line with other big employers in the area.

No true policies in place to protect the rights of an individual to reasonable adjustments in the case of rigid mangers. Managers can hide behind “business does not allow” where it is subjective. Office is overcrowded and lighting bright and lack of privacy. Business is mainly office based so typically only one WFH day. Flexibility with this is down to the manager. Given the overcrowded situation of the office, this doesn’t make sense - I have had multiple times where I have had to wander around the office for a free spot post 9.30.
