      Graduate Mechanical Engineer Interview

      13 Mar 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Woking, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at 2H Offshore (Woking, England) in Jan 2023

      Interview

The 2-stage process first is a team interview which includes you doing a presentation on a past project, and 2H offshore doing a presentation outlining what they do and the benefits. Technical questions on Risers - Watch a youtube video on the IMeche channel talk given by Glen on risers from Frazer Nash consultancy and you are sorted for technical questions. The hard part is the second stage - the Excel challenge, where you have to find the optimum riser wall thickness in 40 mins. This is honestly so much work just for an interview just apply somewhere else.

      Question 1

Tell me about yourself or introduce yourself.

      Question 2

What do you know about 2H Offshore?

      Question 3

Question how to reduce bending stress in Risers.

      Question 4

What stresses do the Risers experience? like wave load, current load, buckling load
      1 Answer

      Question 5

Excel spreadsheet - calculate the wall thickness of a riser assembly - using the beam equation sigma = MI/y and if the stress is in the allowable range then the wall thickness of the pipe is acceptable. The data is given on the Input data sheet and calculations are done in the Calcs sheet. given Data is risers' different components such as upper-stress joints, standard Riser joints, and Lower stress joints. Properties of the different joints such as Outer Diameter, Inner Diameter, wall thickness, and Material yield strength. the new wave and current data are given with wave heights, wave period, and current velocities. The riser is designed for API design codes. Analysis output includes different load cases and the bending moment data along the riser length is given. In the Calculations sheet, you have to summarise the different load cases and draw a bending moment diagram.
