Unfortunately, I was very disappointed in my interview experience and it stinks that I have to write this. I was reached out by the recruiter who said she was impressed with my background (10+ years in Human Capital, 5 years selling talent marketplace to enterprise companies). Had an initial conversation with her and she passed me along to speak with the hiring manager the following week. Had two great conversations with him, then was moved along to speak with the Head of Sales and the Chief of Staff. Really enjoyed those conversations and was given very positive feedback. Everything seemed to be going great and I had sent thoughtful thank you emails immediately after each conversation. The recruiter was quick to set next steps, had open communication and even was texting me along the way.
The recruiter then moved me to the final step which was to meet with one of the co-founders ( who was inspiring to speak with, impressed with my industry experience/knowledge, passion and interest in joining the team) in the morning and then reconnect with the head of sales in the afternoon for a mock sales scenario (Healthcare company wants to build an app to track COVID-19 response rate. Who do you want to speak with, what questions do you ask, how do you position A-Team. Typical closing motions from start to finish).
I was very prepared, had a branded deck created, an outline brief I sent prior to the meeting that answered in detail all the questions they asked. Everything was going great. After the call was done, I was told by the head of sales that I did the exercise perfectly, had the correct personas identified, used great use case examples and asked great questions to find the pain and then sell the solution. He made it seem like I was a shoe in for the role and even discussed start dates. We ended the call with him mentioning that he will reconnect with the recruiter and that I should be hearing back by the end of the week.
That was a Monday, and it was now Friday. I received a text from the recruiter late afternoon on Friday apologizing for the delay and that they were still working on things internally. I should hear back early the following week. Ok great. Well, the next week comes along and I still haven’t heard anything. I follow up on Wednesday afternoon and get a text in the evening from the recruiter again apologizing and that they will have a definite decision by Friday morning latest. Friday morning comes along and I get an email (sent from their Applicant Tracking System) asking for feedback on the interview process. Kinda strange. 15 minutes later, I get a canned generic email that seemed like it was sent from a rejection template from the recruiter saying they went with other candidates and if there are other roles in the future I may be interested in, I should reach back out.
Since the recruiter and I were on a texting/call phone basis, I called her but was sent to voicemail. I replied to the email thanking her, but also wanted to better understand why they ultimately passed on me and to share feedback. Given that I committed 7 weeks to go through their interview process just to be completely strung along at the end, then ghosted, and told no without any explanation through a generic rejection email is not only disappointing and unprofessional, but disrespectful and not a good look for a company that was providing a positive candidate experience up until then. Good luck to A.Team and good luck to anyone starting their interview journey here. Hope it’s a better experience than I had.
