I applied online. I interviewed at ASDA (Clapham Junction, England) in Aug 2017
Interview
There were 3 stages to the interview I attended at the store in Clapham Junction. It was a group interview at first, then you had a go at working in the shop floor, and then an individual interview with the store managers.
Group Interview:
We were split into 2 groups, and then within our groups, we had to tell each other an interesting fact about ourselves, why we wanted to work in Asda and who we wanted to be stuck in a lift with (this was such a random question! So beware of these!) We then had to introduce the person in our group to the others in the room. There were 3 staff members (interviewers) in the room observing you as you do this to see how you interact with others and they will write down notes about you from time to time. We were then given a group activity to do. We had to build a tower with balloons, which was sorta fun and relaxing. Once again, the interviewers will be watching you and assessing how you behave. Tip: Be engaging, don't act bossy, involve everyone in the group and be willing to listen to suggestions.
We then had to fill in a form which asked about your availability. Tip: You will have a higher chance in getting the job the more flexible you are.
We then had a go at working at the shop floor. We worked at the clothing section. We basically just made sure that the clothes rail were tidy and in order according to size. This was relatively relaxing and lasts for about 15 minutes.
We then had a one-to-one interview with 2 of the store managers from the store, but only one of them did all the talking. It was a quick and easy interview that lasted about 10 minutes. The store manager wasn't really bothered about asking you competency based questions, but more interested in finding out what hours you can do and how flexible you are. However, I was asked about my marital status and whether I had any children which I believe they are not supposed to ask these sort of questions because it can be discriminatory.

The interview process at ASDA is designed to assess your suitability for the role and the company culture. It typically begins with an application review, followed by a brief telephone screening. Successful candidates are then invited for a more in-depth interview, which may include practical assessments or group exercises. The aim is to understand your skills, experience, and how you would contribute to their team. ASDA strives to ensure a fair and transparent evaluation for all applicants.
Initial interview followed by a team day session with activities / team work.
Relaxed environment felt more like a day to get to know people and to learn about the business. Some tasks required thought but nothing too onerous.
