      Senior Software Developer Interview

      26 May 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Birmingham, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at ASOS (Birmingham, England) in May 2021

      Interview

I had an initial voice only interview via MS teams with a team lead and HR member of staff. This was tough, I was asked to turn off my video. It was hard to gauge a reaction. Ultimately I passed this step and had a 2-3hr take-home test. You are given some instructions but no way to ask questions. I completed this but was not successful. I was told there was code commented out, stub methods and un-necessary code. My frustration was ASOS promote pair programming during the interview process but did not do it during this test. My comments and commented out code were necessary to explain a flaw in the code. The stub method was there due to vague instructions. The unnecessary code allowed unit testing DateTime.Now. All could be resolved via pair programming. It is a shame ASOS do not practice what they preach during interviews, that being pair programming and making code more testable.

Hi and thanks for taking some time out to leave a review, your feedback helps us make sure we’re giving the best possible Recruitment experience to our teams. We’re disappointed to hear that you didn’t enjoy interviewing with us, as we try our best to give everyone who interviews with us the best possible experience. The pandemic has posed some challenges when it comes to our interview process and we’re trying to keep it as similar to our processes pre-pandemic. We use our tech test to determine how well a candidate can put into practise engineering principles, techniques and approaches, to see how candidates navigates technical challenges. We’re sorry to hear that your experience with our tech test wasn’t the best, and we’ve passed on your feedback to our team.

      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      18 May 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      London, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at ASOS (London, England)

      Interview

1 step. Contact with HR 2. Conversation with current employee. There must be someone in the same position that the candidate is applying for. But there was a mistake in process, so I get Software Engineer instead of Senior Software Engineer. I did not get answers on my questions or clear instruction on the process. 3. Refactoring. I was told that I should not focus on tests, so I did not, but in the feedback report that was a single part where I failed

      Interview questions [1]

      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      18 Jul 2022
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at ASOS in Jul 2022

      Interview

Process took a couple of weeks and I went through an external recruiter. Firstly I had a MS teams video call with an engineering manager and software engineer. Discussing the role in more detail and my relevant experience. This was pretty relaxed and informal. After a week I then had to chase to be given feedback and details on the next stage. Second stage was a take home technical test which 2-3 hours, was pretty straight forward refactoring exercise in order to add unit tests whilst adhering to SOLID principles. Also to keep in mind KISS, YAGNI l, ask don’t tell etc. Thought I’d done ok on this considering the time limit and ASOS not wanting gold plating as mentioned in the test brief. Was told I wasn’t successful as it wasn’t what they were looking for from SSE. Didn’t receive any more feedback than that I.e exactly what was missing/incorrect from my submission. This is really disappointing considering I took the time to do the test. Also considering they advocate pair programming/ TDD the take home test doesn’t really align with that.

Hi and thanks for taking the time to leave a review, we're sorry to hear that you didn't have the best time interviewing with us. We normally send out our tests 1-2 days after a candidate has completed the informal first stage of the process, so we're sorry to hear that you had to chase for feedback and clarity on the next stage of the interview. We always aim to provide feedback to candidates who complete a test and are disappointed to hear that on this occasion that didn't happen for you. Please do reach out to us on talent@asos.com and we'd be more than happy to make this right for you.

      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      17 Aug 2021
      Anonymous employee
      London, England
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at ASOS (London, England) in Aug 2021

      Interview

There were three phases, a phone interview, technical test and a final stage with 3 people. First over the phone talk was quite typical, it allowed both parties to decide if they were happy to proceed, simply talking high level about what they were working on and then me doing the same about my current role. Second stage was a take at home test, where you had 2 hours to refactor a solution based on conditions supplied with the test. Third was a 2 1/2 hour interview with three employees where I discussed my technical test and white boarded (paint) the architecture of solutions at my current role. Plenty of best practice and technical questions asked throughout as well as generic and behavioural based questions. This was a really free-flowing interview which I enjoyed - lots of engagement and felt like I was just having a chat with three similar minded people. Overall it was a great experience where I was kept up to date throughout the whole process and quickly heard back after each phase.
