      C Developer Interview

      19 Apr 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Advent Resources in Sept 2023

      Interview

Was randomly called about a week after submitting my application about whether I was still interested, I let them know I was. She asked me a few questions, one was expected salary. I gave my expected salary then she hit me with "Eh, you have no experience, we'll start at 60k" - I had 4 years experience JUST with C development, not including other areas of work, this should have been an obvious red flag. Was sent some screening questions that you are to answer without using outside tools. For the most part the questions were easily solvable by anyone who used the C language often. There might be a couple of niche things in there involving the language but I don't think they would be deciding factors to getting an interview. This lead to about a week wait before I got a response by phone call that they wanted to have a video interview with me. Keep in mind, they never let me know how they would get a hold of me or how long I would wait after the screening questions (this is an important bit of information). I met with one of their lead engineers to have a simple get to know you interview, talked about my resume, problems I solved, what lead me to be there, and then a simple fizz buzz type of programming problem. Given that I had been waiting about a week for each response, after the interview I didn't think I would get a response within a day or two. I was called about 2 days later saying they wanted to move forward with me and they also wanted to have just one more interview and that this was "Really great news". Again, given that they would randomly call, never letting me know via email if I was free at a certain time - I have work, I'm literally at work - I was never able to actually answer any of these calls. When I called the hiring manager back about 2 hours later from receiving the call she didn't answer so I texted (she had sent me a few texts and messages on LinkedIn, I assumed this was okay). When I texted her what were the necessary steps to move forward I was told that the position had been cancelled. When I inquired further she got really aggressive with her word choice and said every time she called I failed to answer. She made it seem like the reason we weren't moving forward was I failed to answer my phone when she called, she just assumed I'm immediately available to answer whenever she wants. This was the first time I had interacted with a hiring manager that just assumes I'm always free from anything during the day and seems to punish me for not dropping what I'm doing to instantly answer when I couldn't even plan or prepare for the call, I just had to be available for the possibility of a call. All other interviews would plan ahead, ask me if I would be free to talk on X or Y day, or if I was getting an interview, if I could email them a good time so we could speak. This hiring manager just expects you to respond on the spot or you don't get a chance at the job. Most absurd thing I've ever encountered.
