      Insurance Sales Agent Interview

      9 Sept 2014
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Phoenix, AZ
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through other source. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at American Income Life (Phoenix, AZ) in Apr 2014

      Interview

I was contacted on the phone from a hiring manager after they reviewed my resume from careerbuilder.com. The manager informed me that my resume matched the qualities they are looking for as a manager position and to come in for an interview. I did a bit of research online prior to coming in and I realize that the company was an insurance sales company and had negative reviews, but I still figure I'd give the company a chance. When I arrived on my interview date, I was surprised that there were many other people applying as well. My initial sit down interview was with another job seeker. The interviewer briefly scanned both of our resumes and then asked us if we can stay for the group briefing. During the group briefing, we were made to fill out a questioner. As I waited, I looked around there was at least 80 other people and you can tell a lot of people were desperate for work as many were sharing their sob stories. The presentation really hits people emotionally because it describes how much money you can earn if you work hard and how the other perks of the job, such as life insurance, disability insurance, etc. At this point, I knew I wasn't interested in the job, but stayed anyway to see how they actually get their pitch across to get people to work for them. Then the presentation describes the products they sell...life and medical insurance to specific people (mostly policemen and other government workers). There was a really highly emotional female speaker who came in to revive people up to work for the company, but described her day as usually up to 16 hours. The female went on to say that we needed to purchase the study material in order to become insurance salesmen. The material cost over $100 which to some was a lot of money. At the end of the group briefing, the female speaker said "each of you is going to get 2 minutes to tell me why we should bring you back for a second interview. We'll only bring back maybe 5 or 6 of you in total." Since I was in the end, I heard a lot of people saying "please call me, I really want to work for you." When it came to me, I pretty much said "I'd did a lot in the military, its up to you to see if you want to see me do a lot for your company." And I left it at that. The next day, I got another phone call from the hiring manager to come in for the second interview. Since I had the day off anyways, I decided why not? The second interview was me and two other potential workers with a section manager who basically wanted to hear our questions. Every question I asked, he tipped toed around it and didn't give us a straight answer. We spent maybe an hour really hearing that: 1)The job involves a lot of driving your own car and you do not get reimburse for gas. 2)The job does not offer any benefits but you are given a supplemental paycheck to purchase your own health insurance. 3)You must purchase the study material and come to the office to study...the whole time not being paid. 4)There's an 70-80% turn over rate of employees the first year. 5)Salary is commission based only. A good salesman makes $1,600 in commission a week (but doesn't mention the potential expenses that you might encounter that can eat into your sales). When I was asked if I was serious, I said "I still have a commitment with the military, but can I purchase the study material." I was refused the study material (a bit odd?). I was told to call back when my commitment with the military is over.

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at American Income Life (San Francisco, CA) in Nov 2023

      Interview

Process was disjointed and inconclusive. Zoom - 3 total. 1st- basic meet-greet. 2nd- a company promo video you watch alone mostly about an annual convention in a tropical location: nothing specific about the job. 3rd- "Host is in another meeting," waited 20 mins and left, so it never happened.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

There wasn't a real interview. Never got to find out about the agency or the actual position. If it's that disorganized and disrespectful from the get-go, I want nothing to do with it.
