      Sales Manager Interview

      8 Oct 2015
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Toronto, ON
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at American Income Life (Toronto, ON) in Oct 2015

      Interview

This is a pyramid scheme. I had not applied to any position posted, but I was invited to an interview out of the blue. I tried to ask the fellow calling me what positions they had available and he was very cagey. He didn't know the details, but why don't I come in for an interview anyways, his manager can tell me all about the company. Being in need of a job, any job, I went to the office and spoke with a 'manager' (he looked about 22 years old) before being ushered into an info session about the company. Alarm bells, ding, ding, ding! First off, there's no base salary. NO BASE SALARY. All of their agents work as freelancers and 'run their own business'. How it works is they set you up with a few leads (very old leads) and you have to go cold calling on honest hard working families to sell them a product they've never heard of much less want. So you can imagine the prospects of making a good living in this manner. Another problem being a freelancer, you get no benefits! You get no healthcare, dental plan, vacation time, holiday pay, overtime pay! Agents need to use their vehicle for travel everyday, but freelances get no expenses! Freelances have to file their own taxes and T4's with Revenue Canada! And get this, before being able to get hired, they require you to pay an 'admin' fee of $400 to set up (this goes into the managers pockets) and also for you to acquire the LLQC licensing (about $350, paid for yourself, of course) and to go through 1-4 weeks of unpaid training. So you're out almost $800, a month of your time, and you've nothing to show for it. What happens after all that hassle and investment, you ask? Well, AIL works like this, if you, by some miracle manage to sell some poor sucker this insurance, they pay the company their insurance premium. Great, take that number, and divide it by half, because that's how much AIL takes. Now the rest of the 50% remaining, multiply by %35, that goes to your 'team', 'office' and manager! Now finally the remaining 65% of 50% is yours, yay. But wait! If the client you signed stops paying for their policy, you done for! Give your money back, baby, AIL will take it off your hands. Lets do some math here, if you're very good at sales, maybe you can sell $1000 worth of policies this week (dubious maybe). The company takes half, $500 remaining, then 35% goes to your manager so the remaining $325 goes to you, congratulations! Don't forget to deduct your mileage, gas, and taxes from that figure (because remember, you have a 'small business'! (If you get to keep $250 a week after expenses, that'll work out to $6.25/hr, if you've worked 40 hours that week) So don't waste your time and money on AIL Canada, even working at Walmart or McDonald's would pay better.
