      Devops Engineer Interview

      Negative experience

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at AppDynamics in Jun 2016

      Interview

Devops position interview but the company doesn't know what DevOps means. This was quite an interesting interview or very irritating one I would say. HR reached out to me for this position and after screening calls and basic technical call I was scheduled for the technical interview. It was a Skype interview and hold your breath, it was a 4 hour marathon call where all the team members appeared on the call 1 after another asking questions from their own experience field. Only 1 person asked for definitions of cloud, that's it. That is what they call DevOps! I kept myself together for initial 1.5 - 2 hrs but it became a nightmare as I got exhausted and frustrated. I did not get a job description from HR and was told that this is a DevOps position but during the interview process I realized that they don't even understand what DevOps actually means. Source - I am one of the early birds in the DevOps scene and handle some of the most complex stacks and technologies out there today. My understanding from the interview process was that they actually needed a UNIX admin and just for the sake of making it cool to sound they are calling it as a DevOps position. Now, to rub the salt further, there was a team member on other side who saw that i had CCNA at starting of my career which I informed that I did during the start of my career almost 15 years back. So, this networking guy now started asking me the router configuration commands! I was irritated enough and asked this guy what he is recruiting for? a network admin or a DevOps resource? His answer was 'anything in your resume is up for question'. I was irritated enough by his ignorance, arrogance and un-professionalism towards the interview so I did not answer any further questions from him and just answered every question as 'NO' after then. Not stopping there, 1-2 members of the team had shell script problems that they wanted me to fix. Another person was interested in asking performance tuning questions and after spending 14+ years in J2EE domain and worked for some of the most complex application, I explained the classic strategy of performance tuning and issue identification of Java applications and realized the person on other side doesn't even know what I am talking about and has never actually worked in performance issues or any tuning scenarios. Personally, I think the team is very immature, mentally and technically and doesn't know what they are out recruiting for, coupled with very poor leadership skills. Typical case where you make a 4-5 year experience person a manager. HR has to be equally blamed for this disaster as they never sent me any detailed job description, didn't match my skills to the requirements of the position and laid out the terrible interview format. Stay away from this company if you are looking out for a career in DevOps.
