Remote Vice President of Digital Marketing Interview

      7 Aug 2013
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at Articulate Global in Jul 2013

      Interview

I was initially contacted by an external recruiter who phoned within 10 minutes of receiving my resume (I was coming from a much larger company in the same industry). The member of the executive leadership team that I interviewed with spent the first 10 minutes reading off what sounded like a pre-written script about himself (including mention of his firing from his previous position) and limited any company information to what can be found on their website's About page. When I would try to interject with a question or comment he would pause, ignore me, and then go back to reading his script. After he was done (and this went on a long time!) he announced, "At this point I'd like to open the floor to any questions." I chalked the awkwardness of his interview technique up to social anxiety and perhaps a lack of experience interviewing other executive level candidates. I asked 10 relevant questions that seemed to loosen him up and he went beyond our allotted time. Overall, the interview seemed to go well, but he bristled at my mention of having used social B2B techniques to successfully drive sales in the past and refused to believe that Cisco, Xerox and Salesforce are successfully utilizing similar social B2B tactics to drive their own sales. I quickly switched gears to focus on lead generation, A/B testing, cross-promotional business partnerships and customer engagement instead. He also seemed frustrated that I wouldn't provide him with a list of marketing tools he should buy to set up marketing automation. At the end of the interview he asked if I was "still even interested" in working for Articulate. I told him that based on the coverage I had read about Articulate prior to the interview, as well as the trial version of their software I had installed and tested out in the previous few days, it seemed overall like an innovative company with smart people and a solid product. He seemed surprised by my answer and I felt like we ended on a positive note.

      Question 1

Can you give me a list of what I need to buy to set up marketing automation? We need it to take care of itself and we've already spent a lot of money on tools that don't really work.
